THE UNIVERSITY AND THE LIBRARYThe University Library, which is a highly valued partner in teaching and research at the University, hasmore than 10.5 million volumes housed in the Sterling Memorial Library and 16 school and departmentlibraries. It employs a dynamic and innovative staff of nearly 600 FTE who have the opportunity to workwith the highest caliber of colleagues, faculty and students in a variety of contexts conducive to staffdevelopment. A full spectrum of library resources, from rare books and manuscripts to a rapidlyexpanding network of electronic resources, constitutes one of Yale's distinctive strengths. The Library isengaged in numerous ambitious projects such as the renovation of the main library building, thecomplete retrospective conversion of the Library's catalog, and various automation initiatives.

The Art & Architecture Library serves several distinguished programs, including the Schools ofArchitecture, Art and Drama; the Department of the History of Art; the Yale Center for British Art; theYale University Art Gallery; and the entire Yale and New Haven community. A new Arts Library is

presently under design as part of a master plan for the arts area, and will be related to a new DigitalImaging Center, one core program of which will be the creation of an image database serving the artsarea and the campus community. The Art & Architecture Library incorporates the Slides andPhotographs Collection of 315,000 study slides and 183,000 study photographs.

RESPONSIBILITIESReporting to the Associate University Librarian, the Librarian, Art & Architecture Library, is responsiblefor the overall administration, organization, and development of Yale's Art & Architecture Library,including the Slides and Photographs Collection. The Librarian manages all aspects of library service,collection development, budget administration, personnel management and facilities planned for the Art& Architecture Library, and oversees some aspects of planning for the Art & Architecture Library, andoversees some aspects of technical processing. The Librarian directs a staff of two other professional

librarians, six support staff, and a number of student assistants. Working with faculty, students, seniorlibrary administrators, and library staff, the Librarian will evaluate the services, policies, collections,electronic resources, and facilities of the Art & Architecture Library and establish and implement plansfor its continued growth and development. The Librarian will also coordinate the programs andcollections of the Art & Architecture Library with those at the other libraries on campus.

The Librarian serves as a member of the group of senior department heads who work as a managementteam with the University Librarian to set library-wide policies and engage in long-term planning. TheLibrarian advises the Chair of the Department of the History of Art, Dean of the School of Art, and Deanof the School of Architecture on library matters and is responsible for building strong partnerships withfaculty and students, curators and bibliographers, the heads of other University Library departments, andprospective donors. The Librarian is expected to be active nationally in professional organizations.

QUALIFICATIONSM.L.S. degree from an ALA-accredited library school or an equivalent degree. Strong background in ArtHistory, Art, or Architecture, with preference given to candidates with relevant graduate degrees. Five ormore years of professional experience, with demonstrated administrative experience and achievement inan academic or research library. Strong commitment to collection building and to active, innovativepublic service programs, including providing access to information in electronic form. Ability to read atleast one foreign language. Effective oral and written communication skills and demonstratedinterpersonal skills, including the ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, students, and
