HURRICANE HARVEY RELIEF
St. Alban’s is collecting a special offering
for Hurricane Harvey Relief and
Response. Besides making an offering for this
quarter's Outreach organization, Washington
Kids in Transition or the Food Bank, please
make a special offering to assist and comfort
those millions on the Gulf Coast affected by
the ongoing inundation of Hurricane Harvey.
Episcopal Relief and Development, our
denomination's disaster response ministry, is
organized to address the physical, emotional,
and spiritual needs of those affected by the
storm. The Salvation Army is also doing good
work there.
Please designate “Special Donation” on
your check, and we will send a donation from
the church. We will split the donations we
receive between Episcopal Relief and Devel-
opment and The Salvation Army. Donations
will be collected through September.

DRIVERS’ ALERT!! Drivers’ alert! This week marks the beginning of the academic year. Kids from 5 - 18 are returning to schools after two months of irregular hours, carefree days unencumbered by strict schedules, long days, and short nights. Some are heading off to school for the first time. It's a time of transition for all of them - and for their par-ents too. Please be mindful, especially in the afternoons after school lets out, that you might see some pretty unexpected behavior and drive even more carefully than usual.
ECW SHARING VACATION
MEMORIES
Come to our next ECW Coffee on
Saturday, September 30th
at 10:00am. “Sharing Vacation Memories” is our theme.
Claudia Walker will share about her recent
trip to Switzerland and then we’ll have discus-
sions at each table sharing memories of past
vacations and hopes for future ones. Please
join us for this opportunity for fellowship.
COFFEE, TEA AND COMPOST
You’ll notice something different at coffee
hour. Gone are the plastic cup holders with
plastic inserts that we have been using for
many years. The plastic inserts are no longer
available. So we are going compostable with
our switch to paper cups.
The change will enable us to take advantage
of our compost waste service and be better
stewards of the environment. And the good
news is compostable cups are less expensive
than the former plastic inserts.
We have also changed to Chinet brand
paper plates that are compostable. Plates and
cups that have a coating are not compostable,
so the small cups that we use for juice should
continue to be tossed in the garbage. We may
also have some paper plates left with a coat-
ing, so those also need to be put in the gar-
bage.
Thanks to Evie for searching out economic
alternatives that allow us to be good stewards.
BACK-TO-SCHOOL SUPPLIES If you like to take advantage of the back-to-
school sales, and would like to donate some
school supplies for Chase Lake, there is a
copy of the school’s list in the Parish Hall.
Watch for a container for your donations.
Items used by many grade levels are cray-
ons, #2 pencils, wide-rule spiral notebooks or
composition books, glue sticks, pink erasers.
Tip: Office Depot/Office Max has good
prices – spiral notebooks @ $.50; pink erasers,
3 pack @ $.50; Glue Stix, 4 pack @ $1.00;
Elmer’s Glue @ $.25; #2 pencils, 12/box @
$1.00.
If you don’t have time to shop and would
like to contribute money, please make your
check to St. Alban’s and indicate “Chase Lake
Supplies” on the memo line.
Children are so happy when they go to
school and have the proper supplies!
ST. ALBAN’S 2018 BUDGET The Finance Committee will soon start
working on our budget for 2018. As a starting
point, we look at our previous year’s budget
and expenses. If you have a request for some-
thing that you would like included in the
budget for next year -- either a new item or an
increase to an existing budget item-- please
submit your request in writing with the
amount of your request, the ministry and how
the money will be used to enhance St. Alban’s
community. You can either email your
request to maryelleny@comcast.net or put a
copy of your request in the Treasurer’s box in
the church office.
MINISTRY CELEBRATIION –
Youth: Sunday School & Boy Scouts
Sunday School: St. Alban’s has children
ranging from 3 -17 years of age. Regular
children’s sermons are given by Fr. Greg prior
to their departure to Sunday School. Our chil-
dren have also started participating in the
church service. A very successful Easter Egg
Hunt is held and our church youth have also
helped in setting up the 10:30 coffee hour.
Boy Scouts: Last year, Troop 300 had 29 reg-
istered boys and 32 registered adults. There
was one Eagle rank completion last year, 22
rank advancements and 89 merit badges
awarded to Troop 300. In late 2016, the
Troop was awarded the Dan Kidd Troop of
the Year award. Activities include Washing-
ton State Jamboree, Seafarer’s Mission ditty
bag assembly, veterans’ flag placement
events, backpacking trips, bike rides, cleanups
of St Alban’s church grounds in spring and
fall and many more activities.
IT’S SOUP SUPPER TIME AGAIN
It’s time to start pulling out those great
soup recipes for our Soup Suppers which
resume on Wednesday, September 20. These
gatherings are a time for fellowship and shar-
ing, and are held on the third Wednesday of
the month. Mark your calendars!
INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE
In recognition of the International Day of
Peace, Church of the Redeemer is hosting a
Labyrinth Walk on Tuesday, September 19,
beginning at 7:00pm. This will be an inter-
faith event. It is an opportunity to walk with
others seeking peace in our time. A list of
resources for action will be provided for each
walker.
Church of the Redeemer is located at
6210 – 181st Street, Kenmore, WA. The cam-
pus is a short distance north of Bothell Way,
near the Burke-Gilman Trail. The website is
http://redeemer-kenmore.org/. There you will
find a map and directions.
JULY FINANCIALS
St. Alban’s income for July was about
$2,000 ahead of budget, but July was a
five-week month. Sometimes when that hap-
pens, contributions for the following month
can be submitted early. Year-to-date income
is about $3,000 above budget, which is very
positive, especially at this time of year. Ex-
penses for July were about $2,000 under
budget for the month. Net income minus
expenses is positive because we had three
months of savings with Greg starting in July.
Income (actual year-to-date) $ 91,247
Income Budget (year-to-date) 88,029
Actual income minus budget 3,218
Expenses (actual year-to-date) 69,616
A PRAYER
Give us grace, O Lord, to answer readily
the call of our Savior Jesus Christ and pro-
claim to all people the Good News of his
salvation, that we and the whole world may
perceive the glory of his marvelous works;
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy
Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen
STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS
September 3 – Pentecost 17
Now here’s a very vivid vision. How can
we live in God’s love and power so it will
seem to us and to others that we’ve had some
radical surgery – and that the love of His name
(and all that that implies) is truly “grafted in
our hearts”? It’s probably easier for us to
consider the challenges of physical heart sur-
gery than to pray for the blessed addition to
our bodies and minds the true Healer can
make if called upon.
September 10 – Pentecost 18
“For wherever two or three are gathered
in my name, I am there among them.” I read
or heard somewhere that Jesus said, “feed my
sheep, and don’t count them!” But in reality,
numbers do count, and the support we give
each other by faithful attendance at worship
and by our personal and financial participation
for parish ministries is a morale boost to all
who are involved. Pray (and do your part) to
be an active part of a lively, God-centered
congregation!
The Parable of the Talents: When I stand before God at the end of my life I would hope that I would not have a single bit of talent left, and could say, “I used everything you gave me.” Erma Bombeck
