Who are the Guards?

The Guards at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers are members of the 3rd .U.S. Army Infantry Regiment.

They were chosen by how good they were at training and then they had to pass a test.

The Changing of the Guard has been around since 1930.

They change every hour from Oct 1- Mar 31 and every half hour Apr 1- Sept 30.

During the White Glove Inspection, the Commander inspects the Soldier’s gun once and checks the Soldier’s uniform once and if something is wrong the Soldier has to fix it.

The Soldiers in tomb are from WWI, WWII, Korea, and Vietnam.

President Warren G. Harding dedicated the Tomb in 1921 to honor the unknown.

There are three Greek figures on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers representing Peace, Victory, and Valor. There are six wreaths; three sculpted on each side of the Tomb. They represent six big campaigns of WWI. Inscribed on the Tomb is “Here rests in honored glory an American soldier known but to God”.

Who are the famous people buried there?

At Arlington Cemetery there are two famous Presidents buried there. They are John F. Kennedy and William H. Taft.

If you wanted to get buried at Arlington you would have to be a member of the military. You have to pick a head stone, pick what you want written on the stone. You have to schedule the burial, call Arlington cemetery's phone number and then tell them what you want.

There have been soldiers there since the 1800s. There are soldiers there from the Civil War, WWI, WWII, Korean War, Vietnam War, Iraq, and Afghanistan. There are more than 285,000 soldiers buried at Arlington Cemetery.
