SALT+

LIGHT

“You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its saltiness,

how can it be made salty again?

It is no loner good for anything,

except to be thrown out and trampled by men.”

(Matt. 5:13)

What on earth is this about?

Why be salty?

Why be salty?

• Preservative: prevents decay in this rotting, dying world

• Seasoning: adds flavor

Salt in the Bible

• Used to season grain offerings (Lev. 2:13)

• Covenant of Salt (Num 18:19, 2 Chron. 13:5)

• “Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt” (Col. 4:6)

Salty Discussion

1. What evidence is there that society is rotting?

2. What causes us to stop being salty?

3. What are some practical ways we can be salty at work and elsewhere?

“You are the light of the world.A city on a hill cannot be

hidden.Neither do people light a lamp

and put it under a bowl.Instead they put it on its stand,

and it gives light to everyone in the house.

In the same way,let your light shine before men,

that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in

heaven.”(Matt. 5:14-16)

Light in the Bible

• “God is light” (1 Jn. 1:5)• Jesus is “the light of men”

(Jn. 1:4)• “The Lord is my light and my

salvation” (Ps. 27:1)

Light vs. Darkness

• Light: goodness, holiness, purity & truth

• Darkness: sin, rebellion, ignorance & spiritual blindness

Darkness in the Bible

• Genesis: “over the surface of the deep” – light brought life (1:1-3)

• “Place of no return” (Job 10:21)• Plague of darkness in Egypt (Ex.

10:21)• Crucifixion: 3 hours of darkness

(Matt. 27:45)• “Unfruitful deeds of darkness” (Eph.

5:11)

Enlightened Discussion

1. How does our role as light complement our role as salt?

2. Why are we sometimes tempted to hide our light?

3. What happens when people see our good deeds?

Individual Application

What one thing will you ask God to help you do this week

to be SALT + LIGHT

in this dying and dark world?
