History

• Roman arch architecture in Ostia Antica, were known by a number of civilizations in the Ancient Near East

• The ancient Romans learned the arch from the Greeks and Etruscans• The Romans were the first builders in Europe• The segmental arch was first built by the Romans

Construction Build a frame which exactly follows the form of the

underside of the arch.The voussoirs are laid on it until the arch is complete and self-supporting.

They are arch forms displayed in roughly the order in which they were developed

Technical aspects

• All the forces are resolved into compressive stresses• All the compressive forces hold it together in a state of equilibrium• One downside is that anarch pushes outward at the base• The principle of the arch is used so as to benefit from the concrete's strength in resisting compressive stress
