April/May 2017
Dear Parents/Guardians
Preparations are already being made for next school year. KMS will meet possible incoming 6th graders from the neighboring
Elementary schools later this month. Plans are in the works to have this class of students visit our school during class time and
possibly experience lunch at our school. If you know a prospective 6th, 7th, or 8th grader that would like more information about
our school, encourage them to call and we can include them in these visitations. There will also be an Open House and BBQ for
all new to KMS students and their parents on May 4th. As a cooperative effort, the student orientation process has been a
positive and informative experience for all involved. KMS students will be able to pick up their fall class schedules during
registration on August 18th from 12-3 p.m.
To each and every one of you who have supported our school and our dedicated staff, I'd like to take this opportunity to thank
you and salute you for your efforts. It takes time to support your student and his/her school and many of you have taken the
time and it is appreciated.
To all of you - too many to list separately who have;
* complimented our secretarial staff for their caring attitude and hard work - Thank You
*contacted a teacher and told them what a great job they are doing - Thank You
*complimented your child on being a great kid and doing a good job with his/her work - Thank You
*complimented a teacher aide, librarian, volunteer, custodian or bus driver that they help make KMS a great place for students
- Thank You
*complimented our site council members for their dedicated service and leadership – Thank You
We appreciate your continued support and input in making KMS a better place for students and staff. As we plan for next
school year, we would like to invite you to volunteer in any capacity at KMS. KMS is a great place to learn and prepare our
students for the future. We are looking forward to working with each one of you next school year.
Also, it’s important to recognize and thank every student who attended KMS. I enjoy watching you grow into responsible young
adults. I thoroughly enjoy your art, choir/band concerts, drama productions, looking at your class projects and watching you in
action in the classroom and on the playing fields. Your abundant energy and excitement for life is exciting to see. On behalf of
the staff, I would like to wish the Class of 2017 the best of luck in the future.
Lastly, I would thank the students, staff and parents for allowing me to be part of their journey the last eleven years. It has
been a pleasure to serve and to be part of this outstanding community. This is truly a great place to raise kids!! Thanks for
another great year and have a restful and enjoyable summer.
As this year draws to a close we are planning our annual mini-course program and award day activities. Our annual eighth grade
farewell will be held Friday, May 19th at 8:00 a.m. in the gym. Parents and community members are encouraged to attend the
Farewell Ceremony. The school-wide barbecue and awards assembly will also be held on Wednesday, May 24th. Mini courses will
be held on Monday, May 22nd, and Tuesday, May 23rd, 2017. I look forward to seeing you soon.

It’s time for our annual aluminum can drive! Students that bring in 10lbs of crushed
aluminum cans on April 18th, 19th, or 20th get to choose their end-of-the-year mini-course
activities first. Please have your student bring in their bags of cans to the back of the
school and drop them off at the loading dock where staff will be collecting and recording
the student’s names. Make sure your student’s name is recorded on the list. If you don’t
have a student at KMS, and would like to donate cans, we would welcome any donations!
Thanks again!
Our annual Coffee & Donut Drive-Thru will be April 27th beginning at
7:15 AM to honor our KMS Volunteers. Please stop by and grab a donut
and coffee and know how much we appreciate all you do for KMS. The
KMS staff welcomes this opportunity to show our appreciation to all of
the special people who helped in so many ways during the year. Please
plan to attend! No need to RSVP, just show up and enjoy!
Class of 2021
Freshman Parent Orientation Night
Kenai Central High School is looking forward to your child coming to Kenai Central High School next year and wants to include you in the transition process from 8th grade to high school. They would like to remind you of the KCHS Freshman Parent Orientation Night at the Kenai Central High School Little Theater, Monday, April 17, 2017 at 6pm.
The parent orientation will last about an hour. They will discuss the course scheduling process, information about activities, sports, and school procedures. Questions and concerns about the school and its programs will also be a part of the agenda.
Kenai apparel (sweatshirts, t-shirts, hats) will be for sale during the orientation so you can get a head start on being ready to show your Kardinal pride!
Kenai Central High School is excited about the Class of 2021 and they look forward to meeting you all on Monday.
Go Kards!
6th
Grade Camp
The end of the school year is quickly approaching and that
means it’s almost time for 6th Grade Camp. Fees are due
by May 3rd unless arrangements are made directly with a
6th Grade teacher. Students can still sell Arby’s coupons to help fundraise for
those fees, so get busy! It will be great fun for all!
6TH
GRADE VISITATION
KMS will host a visitation for 5th and 6th graders from area elementary schools the last week of April. K-beach students will visit on April 27th from 8:50- 11:20, Kaleidoscope students will also visit on the 27th from 11:20- 1:50. Mountain View students will attend on the 28th from 8:50 – 11:00. An Open House Orientation and BBQ for all NEW to KMS students and their families will
be held on Thursday, May 4th @ 5:30PM. Spread the word to friends and relatives with middle school age students about our visitation days and orientation.
CONGRATULATIONS to our March Students of the Month. Cooper Bernard, Isabelle Harris, Kaitlyn Herrmann, Melanie Hopkins, Audrey Larson, Eli Morris, Carter Tennison, River Tomrdle, and Megan Wolverton. KMS is honored to have such committed and dedicated students and we thank you for your continued efforts to be outstanding! These students received a pizza for lunch to honor their efforts.
Join us for the annual SPRING POP CONCERT, which is always a delightful showcase of our middle schooler’s
abilities. Mrs. Bird does an excellent job of bringing forth the bottled potential of each youth. We invite everyone
to attend and help us bid adieu to Mrs. Bird as she directs the final concert of a long and fruitful career. She is a
treasure at Kenai Middle and we wish her well. The concert will be held at the KCHS Auditorium on April 27th
at 7PM.
The last Band Concert of the school year will be held at the KCHS Auditorium on April 25th at 7 PM. The concert will include performances by the KMS
Beginning Band, Intermediate Band, and Concert Band as well as the KCHS Jazz Band. You won’t want to miss this spectacular performance.
Take advantage of summer to connect with your child
Summertime is wonderful family time. You may see your child more during the day. But even if you don’t, you can take
advantage of the more relaxed evenings that make this an ideal season for spending more time with your child.
Experts agree that children who spend quality time with their parents tend to perform better academically. To make the
most of your extra time together this summer:
Set aside at least one evening each week as Family Night. Cook a meal together, talk, play board games. Avoid
watching television.
Get your child’s opinion. Many middle schoolers enjoy current events. Because kids this age tend to be idealistic
and would like to “save the world,” they often have strong opinions. Take time to hear your child’s thoughts and
ideas.
Hold regular family meetings to solve problems and discuss plans. Brainstorm ideas about fun ways you can
spend time together.
Take your child along on errands and visits to friends and relatives. Your child may not always want to go and
that’s OK. But compromise on a schedule that includes her some of the time.
Participate in family traditions. Traditions bond children to their families. If you always go to the same park to
watch fireworks or attend summer sports events in your town, keep doing it. No traditions? Create some together.
KMS students will be participating in two upcoming math competitions during May.
Teams of 6th graders will compete in the Elementary Trimathlon held at Mt. View
Elementary on May 4th. Events will include chess, prime factors, word problems, and a
team lightning round. Students in grades 6, 7, and 8 will travel to Homer on May 11th for
the Middle School Math Meet, with questions tied to MathCounts curriculum in
individual, mixed-school teams, and lightning rounds. Good luck with your competitions,
mathletes.
