“Working in the Provost’s
Liaison’s Office allows me to
explore new avenues and learn
new skills.”
Isha Sheth comes to Stony Brook University from nearly 7,300 miles away. Her
hometown of Gujarat, India is a place of rich heritage, including the birthplace of
the Hindu god Krishna as well as the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi, known for
his important role in the Indian Independence movement.
Isha completed her undergraduate degree in Instrumentations and Control Engi-
neering at Nirma University in Ahmedabad, India. She is currently working to-
wards her Master’s degree in Business Administration and Management at Stony
Brook University, after arriving in January for the spring 2013 semester.
Ms. Sheth joined the Provost’s Liaison’s team in February of 2013 and has since
become an integral member of the department. At the Provost’s Liaison’s Office,
Isha loves that she can step outside of her everyday tasks and work on different
projects, including website design and specialized projects such as eBook tech-
nology research. “Working in the Provost’s Liaison’s Office allows me to explore
new avenues and learn new skills,” she said. Isha’s responsibilities include help-
ing professors with their course material requisitions, providing complimentary
desk copies, and other day to day tasks.
When she is not studying or working, Isha enjoys painting, traveling, cooking,
dancing and reading. Isha is fluent in four different languages including English,
Sanskrit, Hindi, and Gujarati. She has also dabbled in French since she loves
learning languages and exploring different cultures.1

Faculty Spotlight on Dr. Charlie Robbins
“At the end of the day, it is about
making sure we are providing
the best possible academic
experience for students.”
As an educator, Dr. Charlie Robbins has always felt that his mission in life was to
make a positive difference. After obtaining his undergraduate degree in psychol-
ogy and a masters and doctorate in social welfare, he joined the staff and faculty
at Stony Brook.
Dr. Robbins was born and raised in New York City, but is proud to call Stony Brook
his home. He started his career at Stony Brook University in 1989 as the Director
of Social Work for University Hospital and an adjunct professor for the School of
Social Welfare. Dr. Robbins went on to become the Assistant Dean for Health and
the Associate Dean within the School of Social Welfare. In 2010, Dr. Robbins was
appointed Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education and Dean of the Undergradu-
ate Colleges.
Dr. Robbins is extremely proud of the University and everyone that works hard to
make Stony Brook one of the best universities in the world. “I am really blessed,”
he explained, “to have the opportunity to do something I care so much about and
to interact with and impact so many students.”
Dr. Robbins works closely with many members of the Stony Brook community, in-
cluding students, staff and faculty. He is very committed to making sure that
every student that comes to Stony Brook leaves with “the tools necessary to begin
the next phase of their lives – whether that is graduate school, employment or en-

tering the service.” Dr. Robbins still finds time to teach an undergraduate seminar for freshmen and to be a part of several Ph.D. stu-
dents’ dissertation committees.
“At the end of the day, it’s about making sure we are providing the best possible academic experience for students,” he said.
In addition to being an avid Stony Brook football and basketball fan, Dr. Robbins spends his free time working with several non-profit
agencies. Up until this year he was an official NGO (nongovernmental organization) delegate to the United Nations where he represented
the International Association of Schools of Social Work. His areas of professional interest run the gamut from social justice, gender
rights, LGBTQA rights, public health and health care disparities, violence and much more.
Dr. Robbins is extremely proud of how people have come together to reorganize the significance of the Undergraduate Colleges at Stony
Brook. “We keep students at the center of everything we do,” he explains. “We want to create an environment in which all people can
thrive.” He also mentioned that he’s proud that Stony Brook University continues to become “a climate in which diversity is celebrated in
all it dimensions.”
Dr. Robbins has been married to his wife for 39 years and is the proud father of two adult children. He cites his family as the most im-
portant thing in his life and explains that they give him the strength to do all the things he does. “As long as the work you’re doing is
your passion, you’ll find the energy and drive to do whatever is needed,” he explained.

Friend of the Bookstore Ed O’Connell
Remembering Ed O’Connell,
Radiation Safety Officer,
Professor and
Friend of the Bookstore
Our hearts and thoughts go out to the family and friends of Edward O’Connell,
who passed away on February 14, 2013. Ed was a friend not only to the Univer-
sity, but also the University Bookstore. Jay Ahgharian, Assistant Store Manager
and friend of Ed, described him as “full of life” as well as inspiring, kind, and
multidimensional. Ed was impressed with the level of customer service he re-
ceived at the bookstore and quickly became friends with members of the staff.
When Ed was not working as a radiation safety officer and professor on campus he
was involved in one of his many hobbies. Ed O’Connell loved running drum circles
and sharing his passion with others during the University Bookstore’s Campus
Lifetime Event Series and at Stony Brook University’s annual Earthstock festival.
His hobbies also included photography, designing labyrinths such as the Red
Dragon Labyrinth located across from the Wang Center on campus, and even bak-
ing.
Most Fridays, Ed would wake up at 4:00am to join the Franciscan brothers who
live at Little Portion Friary in Mount Sinai to help bake bread. He would often
share his bread with the University Bookstore staff. “It was a pleasant and heart-
warming surprise,” Mr. Ahgharian said.
Ed O’Connell was an incredible member of the community and will be missed by
all of us.
