CLINICAL INSTRUCTOR EDUCATOR (CIE)

ATC or Physician Attends CIE Seminar Minimum 3 years of work experience Assists in developing, implementing, and

evaluating a clinical education program

APPROVED CLINCIAL INSTRUCTOR (ACI)

ATC Minimum 1 year of work experience Completed ACI training Provides formal instruction and evaluation

of clinical proficiencies Provides direct supervision of students

CLINICAL INSTRUCTOR (CI)

ATC or other healthcare professional Minimum 1 year of work experience Teaches, evaluates, and supervises students

in field experiences NO formal evaluation of clinical

proficiencies

ATHLETIC TRAINING STUDENT (ATS)

Student enrolled in a CAAHEP accredited entry-level Athletic Training Education Program

CLINICAL EDUCATION

Students’ formal acquisition, practice, and evaluation of clinical proficiencies

Concurrent clinical education • minimum period of 2 academic years• associated with academic credit• requires a syllabus

CLINICAL EDUCATION cont.

Direct supervision from an ACI• classroom• laboratory• clinical education experiences

Supervision from a CI• field experiences

CLINICAL EDUCATION EXPERIENCE

Integration of the following skills:• psychomotor skills• cognitive skills• affective skills• clinical proficiency skills

Occurs under the direct supervision of an ACI

DIRECT SUPERVISION

Formal instruction and evaluation of clinical proficiencies by an ACI

Constant visual and auditory interaction between the ACI and ATS

ACI is physically present

FIELD EXPERIENCE

Informal learning Practice clinical proficiencies under the

supervision of an ACI or a CI Exposure requirements

• upper extremity• lower extremity• equipment intensive• general medical

SUPERVISION

An ACI or a CI plans, advises, and evaluates the ATS in field experiences

Daily personal or verbal contact between the ACI/CI and ATS

FIRST RESPONDER

An ATS certified in first aid and CPR Assistance is readily accessible by

telephone or walkie-talkie Assistance provided by ATC or EMS NOT a component of clinical education

CLINICAL SETTING

Clinical environment where health care services are provided

Primary settings • athletic training facilities• athletic practices• competitive events
