Road of 5-S implementation in Tuen Mun Hospital

• 5-S principles were firstly introduced by core members of Hospital Quality Improvement Committee in 1999

• It was noted some frontline staff attended 5-S training and the techniques have been already applied in some of the quality projects then

• Albert Lee attended 5-S seminar organized by OSH Council and noted that 5-S principles were widely practised in the private sector with rewarding results

• The promotion of hospital-wide 5-S practice started with the proposal of allocating training fund from the T&D Committee

Training of 5-S

• Training fund allocated in year 2000

• Professor Ho contacted for assistance

• By September 2000, more than 60 supervisors and frontline staff attended training including HCE

Other departments’ initiatives

• TMH staff attended the first 5-S seminar organized by HAHO in 2000 - PMH model

• O&T Department’s 5-S project won the 1st runner-up prize in LRT OSH enhancement forum in July 2000

• O&T Department presented her 5-S project in our monthly management meeting in August 2000

5-S plans and observing 5-S principles; and yielding positive results

• In September 2000, HQIC supported the first 5-S Practice Competition in TMH

• Organizing team - Albert, Tsui, Bonnie, Zoey & David

TMH 5-S Practice Competition

• 16 teams participated

• $500 were rewarded to each team

• Audit visits to the 16 workplace to identify the 5 finalists

• The final competition in March 2001

• Competition in form of PowerPoint presentation and role-play

• Professor Ho was invited as a member of our judging panel

• Other members included HCE, GM, COS, HQIC Chairman

• The winning teams were rewarded $1000, $700 and $500

• More than 220 attendance• Representatives from 5 hospitals attended

• Participated the seminar organized by 5-S Association in May 2001

• 5-S seminar organized by HAHO in June 2001

• Visit by Yan On Hospital in September 2001

• Additional supporting staff to support 5-S implementation in various departments in year 2001
