The iPad Evolves.
• Just over a year ago, Apple released iPad to great fanfare
• 14 months later, Apple have sold over 25 million iPads worldwide
• 30% of iPad2 sales are to existing iPad users, with 70% going to new users
• iPad now holds 80% tablet market share

5. Front and rear Camera – FaceTime and iMovie

Wi-Fi iPad at School
Wi-Fi 3G plus Wi-Fi
School’s Cisco Router
DET Authenticated Proxy Filter
School Wireless
Access Point
But iPad is a Consumer Device.
• It’s a personal tablet computer designed for the masses
• It expects a direct internet connection, either wirelessly or 3G to work fully
• “Personal” means it’s designed for ONE user – sharing is its weakness
• App installation & management across multiple class iPads can be an issue
iPad Wi-Fi at School What works?
• Safari Web Browsing (but not Flash sites)
• DET Email & Calendar
• APPS that do NOT need Internet Connection eg. – Productivity apps
– Offline educational apps or utilities
What DOESN’T work?
• App Store / iTunes
• YouTube
• Any App that needs an Internet connection – i.e. Just about every fun,
practical, useful, powerful reference or communication app that exists for the iPad
Sorry, Why Don’t iPad Apps work at School via Wi-Fi??
• NSW DET uses Authenticated Internet
– DET Portal ID and Password for each user
• While the iPad wireless settings allow for proxy and authentication (Safari is OK), the Apps tend to want to connect directly
• The DET Proxy does not allow for this
• Apps need to cater for the proxy, but don’t
• Software maturity may resolve this in time
iPad School Concerns. 1. It’s personal. Your
Email, Facebook, Twitter are locked in. Share your iPad? Share your accounts
2. They are still costly, starting at $579 each
3. iTunes and App Licencing are quite complicated
4. 3G ain’t free
5. If you use a 3G connection, you BYPASS DET Filters and security – potential critical incidents await
6. The App-DET Proxy issue is often a deal-breaker. It’s no good for some purposes if the iPad is crippled.
So, Should You Buy an iPad?
• For Personal use? –YES!! – they are great.
• For School use? –MAYBE – but know exactly what
you want to use it for and its limitations
