AP STATISTICS

“Do Cell Phones Distract Drivers?”

RESULTS OF CELL PHONE STUDY

WHAT ARE THE POSSIBILITIES?

• Either the cell phones make a difference, and are a real cause for driver distraction

OR

• There is NO difference between cell phones and passengers, and these study results were due to the random assignment of the drivers to the treatment groups.

SIMULATION RESULTS

• Number of drivers who miss exit in cell phone group in each trial…

• RECALL – these results assume that the cell phone makes no difference in missing the exit!

COMPUTER SIMULATION RESULTS

4 BROAD CONCEPTUAL THEMES

• Exploring Data: Describing patterns and departures from patterns

• Sampling and Experimentation: Planning and conducting a study

• Anticipating Patterns: Exploring random phenomena using probability and experimentation

• Statistical Inference: Estimating population parameters and testing hypotheses
