What’s that?
Casa Batlló is a building, which is placed on Passieg de Gràcia 43 in Barcelona.
It was rebuilt by Antonio Gaudi in 1904-1906. He also designed the interior of the house (furniture,
lighting and chandeliers).
The building
The original building was erected in 1875-1877. The manufacturer of fabrics Josep
Batlló i Casanovas, who was the owner of Casa Batlló from 1900, firstly planned to destroy the old building and build a new
one, but in 1904 he decided to rebuilt the tenement.
How it looks? The building is richly
ornamented. The facade of the house has a lot of elements which refer to
the animal theme – bones (on balconies), scales (roof and plates
on walls). The front was decorated
with colorful pieces of ceramics and broken
tiles.
The dragon? The roof brings to mind a dragon leather – it probably refers to the legend of saint George,
which is the element of national identity of Catalans.
UNESCO
Casa Batlló is on
the UNESCO list
of world heritage.
