Existing Technology for Railway Safety
Anti Collision Device (ACD) used by Konkan Railways, India
Existing ACD uses both radio frequency and a global positioning system (GPS)
through satellites, whereby a train is brought to a halt if the track ahead is not clear.
Anti Collision Device (ACD) is a self-acting microprocessor-based data
communication device installed at the Track Location and in the Signal Station.
The ACDs are deployed and linked to 53 stations, 80 manned and 27 unmanned
gates, 98 locomotives, 50 guard vans and 179 inclinometer-protected cuttings.
The cost of the ACD deployment on KR is approximately Rs 35 crores. The same
ACD will be deployed on the rest of the Indian Railways at an estimated cost of Rs
1,600 crores for 64,000 kilometers of rail routes.

• Existing Anti-Collision Technologies is heavily dependant on GPS ( Global
Positioning System)
• GPS has its own significant limitations due to limitation of the signal reaching
all places [e.g. underground tracks, tunnels, under bridges etc).

Detection and Prevention of Head-on collisions and Rear-end collisions.

Detection and Prevention of Collisions with Obstacles on the Railway Track
• This System can detect the presence of any obstacles which can be vulnerable to the
train/locomotive at a predefined distance and eliminates the collision with obstacles
such as mudslides, rocks, avalanches, trees, etc.
