Questions About Mobile Computing"
Presented by Tim Shea

From Wiki: Mobile computing is a form of human–computer interaction by which a computer is expected to be transported during normal usage. Mobile computing has three aspects:
mobile communication mobile hardware mobile software
What is Mobile Computing?
3 Aspects of Mobile Computing
mobile communication - addresses communication issues in ad-hoc and infrastructure networks as well as communication properties, protocols, data formats and concrete technologies. This includes 3G/4G networks, wifi, etc.
mobile hardware – addresses the hardware, e.g., mobile devices or device components. This includes smartphones, tablets, netbooks, notebooks, etc.
mobile software - deals with the characteristics and requirements of mobile applications. These are APPS.
Okay, but what are we talking about?
Smartphones – iPhone, Blackberry, Windows Phone, Android, WebOS (Palm)
Tablets – based on same software platform/OS as smartphones, some with full Windows 7, some with dual boot Windows 7/Android
Netbooks – undersized laptops, usually with cell modem integrated, usually running Windows XP/7
Notebooks – traditional laptop, usually Win XP/7
Key Business Functionality of Mobile Computing
Phone/Text
Email/Calendar/Schedule/Contacts (Exchange)
Camera/Video Camera
Web Browsing
Chat/Instant Messaging (Skype, Google Chat, MS Messenger, Yahoo Chat, etc.)
Social Media (LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook)
View & Edit Documents (MS Office, PDF)
Remote access to desktop computer
Many more

Cloud Computing
Cloud computing is a model for enabling convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g., networks, servers, storage, applications, and services) that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or service provider interaction.
Different Kinds of Cloud
Public (shared) Hosted Offsite
Advantage – low cost
Disadvantage – less flexible
Private (dedicated) Hosted Offsite
Advantage – easy access
Disadvantage – need excellent Internet connectivity
Private (dedicated) On-Premise
Advantage – local, good performance
Disadvantage – you still need a data center
Wireless Networking
Tablets & Smartphones leverage local wireless
Many tablets are wireless only, no cell
Setup with single wireless domain, allows roaming
Be aware that GUESTS are bringing these devices into your environment as well
Security Concerns
ALL smartphones and tablets are susceptible to viruses, malware, etc.
Also, these devices are ULTRA portable, so you want some tracking software on them.
You also want to be able to do a remote erase if any critical data is present.
Encryption options are rare for most of these devices, so don’t store privacy data there.
