Animal Caused Outages

• According to the United States Energy Information Administration, about 13 million people nationwide were affected by animal caused outages in 2015.

• Some animals that have been reported to cause outages are: – Squirrels, Birds, Raccoons, Rats, Skunks, Snakes,

and even Fox.

Areas of Concern for VELCO

• Most of VELCO’s system is at a voltage where the clearance is large enough that these small animals shouldn’t cause any problems.

• However, the VELCO assets in the range of 13.8KV can be vulnerable. – East Ave Substation – Taft Corners Substation – Queen City Substation – North Ferrisburg Substation – Charlotte Substation – Shelburne Substation
