An Evening with Mozartby Andrea Melisa R. CambaAs clich as it sounds, I am truly one of Mozarts admirers. !his is "robably the reason why I was very e#cited with this semesters o"era class. I $ust thin% that more than the genius of his instrumental wor%s, Mozart e&ortlessly graced the music industry of classical music through o"era. 'e modi(ed the norms of )aro*ue o"era and made his own mar% through his sim"le yet com"licated music, themes and character develo"ment. +ur second semester in o"era class consisted of an all,Mozart re"ertoire. -e "erformed ensemble arias from Bastien und Bastienne, Le Nozze de Figaro, Cosi fanTutte, Don Gioanni and Magic Flute. It was more fun for me this time because we .ew away from solos and focused on collaborations. /ane -ee, 0ina /orge and 1eil Arvin Chua o"ened the concert with a trio from Cosi fan Tutte. I thin% this was a very strong o"ening because of the su"erb "erformance of the three singers. I love how the two so"ranos wor% on their chemistry which led to a fantastic e#ecution of their duet "arts. !heir voices blended really well togetherwhich "roduced good harmony. !hough Chua is not a baritone, I thin% that he still delivered and did $ustice to his "art in the trio. 1e#t was Lascia chio pianga from Don Giovanni "erformed by me and Chua. I thin% that we did a decent $ob in this duet des"ite our mista%e in the A "art wherein we switched vocal lines. Im $ust ha""y that we survived the whole song without brea%ing character. !he third song was Prender !uel "runettino from Cosi fan tutte, "erformed by /asmin 2alvo and 3aye 4u"ano. !his duet is "art of my favorite list because of its very light character which truly showed both their "ersonalities. 4u"ano and 2alvo did a very good inter"retation, both channeling their comic yet witty "ersonas in this "iece.Papageno, Papagena# 3rom The Magic Flute came ne#t. Im very familiar with this "articular duet so I really set high e#"ectations for this "erformance. 5ocally, I thin% both were technically e*ui""ed but generally, I thin% it lac%ed the fun and lightness that the "iece re*uires. I dont %now if its the slow tem"o 6slower than usual7 or theinter"retation which made the number 8so,so9. !he (fth song of the concert was 2ull aria from :e 1ozze de 3igaro, "erformed by Mheco Manlangit and Elle !uason. I also li%e this number "robably because of my bias on this duet. !his is one of my favorite "ieces by Mozart and I thin% that both singers inter"reted it very well. I love their harmonies as well as the beautiful contrast of both their voices. I thin% their vocal timbre (t the song very well. My duet with Manlangit came after. -e "erformed $h guarda sorella from Cosi fan Tutte. !o be honest this was my biggest tiger of the night and I was really nervous singing this "iece. I thought that we made the best out of what we can do with the song although I ho"e there could be another chance ne#t time to redeem ourselves.After this came the Magic 3lute trio.
