Sewage woes breakthrough

PERSERVERANCEpaidoff forSouthgateBusi-ness Park and AfriForumwhen they met witheThekwini officials last week to resolve theproblem with sewage running into the South-gateBusinessParkand theUmdoniBirdSanc-tuary.
“eThekwini emptied the sewage well bor-deringthepark inthesameweek.Wewent intothe meeting suggesting that we assist them tosort the problem out and the municipalityshowed they are prepared to play their part,”says Southgate Business Park manager Fransvan der Merwe.
Hesaysover thepastcoupleofdays, thewa-ter quality has improved significantly.
“We are also doing everything in our powerto educate business owners regarding run-offwater, suchas that fromcar-washingbays.Un-like the other business park, businesses in our
park are individually owned, complicatingcontrol.
“Theoverallreactionisthatownersareuna-ware they are causing problems andmost arepro-nature and willing to oblige.”
He says pump stations are still a problemwhicheThekwinineeds toworkonas theyare,in many instances, the source of contamina-tion.
“Another problem is that the existing infra-structure is possibly not sufficient to copewiththe amount of people — townships, squattercamps and businesses,” he adds.
There isalsoasewage linewheremunicipalvehicles can dump, but it appears the streamgets contaminated on dumping days. This iscurrently under investigation.
“I believe the solution to the problem lies inthat everybody should take responsibility oftheir premises and make sure where theirwaste is going andworkwith the stakeholdersto solve problems,” Van der Merwe says.

Drug dealers, bad for business
FEVER REPORTER>>ucnews2@feveronline.co.za
WINKLESPRUIT business owners are per-turbed over apparent drug dealing on theirdoorstep.
“I can’t take it anymore—theyoperate inthe area between theWinklespruit caravanpark and the railway line and the taxi rankacross the street. They steal from the areaand then sell their stolen goods in the park-ing lot in front of our businesses to get drugmoney.
The effects of thewhoonga they deal in ishorrific.Theyharassmycustomersandifwetalk to them, they swear at us,” says a dis-tressed business owner, who wishes to re-main anonymous.
Thebusinessownerssaytheproblemhasescalatedoverthepastthreemonthsasdeal-ers have pitched tents in the open area next
to the railway station and are living there.“Wehave reported to the police regarding cer-
tain instances, but the problem remains. Thereare two young men who harass us continually.Theyareextremelyaggressiveandit isnowaffect-ing our business and preventing our customersfrom coming,” he says.
SAPS Captain Charlene van der Spuy says theSAPS is aware of the problem.

with DSBF members and the idea to replicatesomething similar in Amanzimtoti was born.
To raise funds to put the tree up, the DSBFthemed their annual charity golf day “Bring lightto a child’s life”. With the proceeds and supportfrom local company RBI Tech and the FanFoundation, the idea become a reality.
The ideal location was found to be the south-ern end of the promenade and the municipalitygranted approval for the erection of the tree, following negotiations driven by councillor AndréBeetge.
“The site was selected as it will not only ren-der the tree visible from the N2 highway, but alsofrom the flats along the promenade, those over-looking the lagoon and those travelling alongKingsway or at sea. Sufficient parking is availablenext to Le Escallier flats, as well as along the la-goon near Ollie’s Pub.
“It is also within walking distance of the TotiMall that has additional parking space,” Beetgesays.
The official switching on of the lights will coin-cide with the Pregnancy Crisis Centre night marketon Saturday 13 December.
RJ’s will also open their rear entrance, thusaffording easy access to the restaurant andFunland.
Rogie’s Park will accommodate music, foodstalls and the informal traders in renovated stalls.
Carols by Candlelight will be facilitatedthrough Ministers Fraternal on Saturday 20December from 7pm.
An appeal is made to the community to takeChristmas presents to this event to be distributedto those less fortunate. This second event willagain coincide with another Pregnancy Crisis Cen-tre night market with the same expectation fromRJ’s and Rogie’s Park. On 25 December a churchservice will be held at the tree at 9am.
RBI Tech will remove the tree in early January.Business or individuals who wish to contribute
or add value to the tree can contact the organis-ers on info@dsbf.co.za

“None of my clients are disappointed with theirfloral arrangements, I make sure of that,” Augustussays.
Always looking at new ways to be creative andkeeping up with modern trends, customers can al-ways expect to see something unique and new.
Most likely this is the reason why the majority ofAugustus’ customers are word-of-mouth referrals. “Isee my creativity as a gift from God,” the formerteacher explains.

Kingsway pupils prove their JSE ‘savvy’TANIA SANDBERG>>ucnews2@feveronline.co.za
FOUR Kingsway High pupils provedtheir Johannesburg Stock Exchangesavvy when they competed in a na-tionalcompetition,theJSEgame,andcame second out of 302 schools and7 200 pupils.
Theannualcompetitionisrunoversixmonths—from1Marchto30Sep-tember — and the pupils, BrandonHall,JasonleRoux,ThomReimering-Visser and Kailash Rajh say it is the10th year the school entered underthementorshipofMrH.Bridgmohan.
“The pupils participated in thelow-risk category. We had R1 millionin pretend money and earnedR37 000 in dividends over sixmonths,” says Bridgmohan.
“I think our years of participationand learning how things work paidoff,” he says about theirwinning reci-pe.
He says the use of new technologyby pupils, using the internet and up-dating their shares on a daily basis, contributed to their win.
“We checked the background offour companies and invested mostlyin pharmaceutical companies. Theactivity was done in our own time,
once a day.Wewould then communi-cate via groupmessaging to see if theothers agree,” says Le Roux.
“I learnt that you canmake plentyof money if you havemoney to investin the stock market.
“The highlight was when we flewto Johannesburg. We won R14 500,ourmentor got R3 250, each of us gotR2 500andourschoolearnedR1000.We have all reinvested our winningmoney,” Rajh says.
“Normally I enter three or fourdif-ferent teams in different categories, but this year I enteredonly two teamsand I am pleased they did very well,”Bridgmohan says.
His advice to thosewanting topar-ticipate is thatyoushouldbeJSEliter-ate, be stock-wise know how sharesare traded.
“Study, there is a lot of literatureavailable, start young and use the in-ternet.”

autofeverAROADSIDE emergency can be traumatic and
that can cause most drivers to be so over-whelmed they forget what to do, often leading
to disaster on roads. If a flat tyre, mechanical breakdown, or empty fu-
el tank forces you to stop driving, the most importantthing is to take action to ensure your safety and thatof your passengers.
Tips from the auto expertsGet off the roadPull your vehicle as far off of the road as safely
possible. If your vehicle is in or near traffic and youcan safely walk to another location, do so.
If the vehicle is parked on the shoulder of a busyhighway, exit on the passenger side.
Lock the door and leave a note on the windshieldin case roadside assistance or the police arrive.
Make your vehicle as visible as possibleTurn on the hazard lights as soon as you realize
that your vehicle is slowing down. Once stopped, usewarning signals (i.e hazard triangle or warning light)to alert drivers to your vehicle’s presence. Place thewarning device as far behind your car as practical togive other road users as much notice as possible.
Display a distress signalIf you need police help, raise the hood or tie a
white cloth to the radio antenna or door handle, orhang the cloth out of the top of the door and closeit on the cloth.
Keep the doors lockedIf the vehicle is in a safe location, wait inside but
keep the doors locked and your safety belt fastened.Exercise cautionUse good judgment when accepting help from
strangers. If someone of whom you’re suspiciousstops next to your vehicle, lower the window justenough to talk out of.
If you’re waiting for help, thank them for stoppingbut tell them you don’t need assistance. If you needhelp, ask them to make a call for you. — Wheels24.

Roadside emergency tips
Always carry a red warning triangle in yourvehicle and should you break down, place onthe road behind your vehicle as a warning toother road users of your predicament.
