Alternative fuel

What is alternative fuel?• Fuel made from materials that would

otherwise be disposed of

• Solid Recoverable Fuel (SRF) is what I want

to talk about

• There are also bio-fuels that are converted to

gas in anaerobic digesters (animal, food and

farm waste, etc.)

• Bio-fuels such as wood, peanut shells, etc.

What is SRF?

• Anything that is in the waste stream that has

caloric value and is free of chlorine (PVC for

example) and harmful elements

• SRF also has to be low in moisture (<18%)

• High and consistent BTU value (>10,000)

• Consistent in size (<1” or <2”)

Who uses SRF

2DMaterial is flat in nature. Burns quick and has

little mass.

3DMaterial is cube like. Burns slower and has

significant more mass.

manufacturing

Why call it “manufacturing”?

Needs to meet specifications

This is an example of an EPA

certified fuel that is

considered a “non-waste

fuel”

Why call it “manufacturing”?

The process requires:

• Floor sorting to remove undesirable materials and

to feed an appropriate recipe

• Primary shredding

• Screening and sorting to remove inerts, metals and

chlorine

• Secondary shredding

• Drying if moisture is above 20%

Primary shredder

Shredding of untreated waste

Output <12”. Smaller is

possible, but not practical for a

high rate of production

Screening and sorting

This could be as simple as a magnet and wind sifter,

or a full blown MRF

MSW typically requires a MRF

Shredding of pre-treated material
