Ben Wright Thomas Johnson
A graduate of DuVall High School in Prince Georges County ,Ben played various positions including running back, linebacker and defensive back. After an injury when trying out for Maryland’s football team, his interest became weightlifting. During the off season, Ben used to drop by College Park and watch Maryland’s football team work out in the weight room. He got to know the coaching staff and worked at the Terps coach, Jerry
Claiborne’s camp. Wright saw how Maryland’s emphasis on weightlifting helped produce ACC titles and therefore “Bigger, Faster, Stronger” became his basic coaching philosophy for the past 44 years of coaching.
Ben started his 44 year football coaching career in PG County where he was an assistant for Duvall High School for 3 years and Head Coach at Eleanore Roosevelt High School for 7 years where he compiled a 48-36 record. In 1984, Ben became the Head Coach at Thomas Johnson HS in Frederick County. In his 26 years at TJ, Ben compiled a record of 168-113.
After taking over at the start of the 1984 season, TJ made five straight state playoff appearances from 1993-97; including a trip to the Class 3A state title game in 1997, where the Patriots fell, 7-0, to Wilde Lake. TJ also ripped off a 34-game Central Maryland Conference winning streak during that span. His teams have won 4 regional and 8 league championships.
Ben is the third winningest coach in Frederick County history, his 168 wins trail only Coaches Tim Ambrose and Dave Carruthers, both Hall of Fame members.
