ALGEBRA 1 CCFind Slope and x- and y-intercepts

Vocabulary

• The slope of a nonvertical line is the ratio of the vertical change (the rise) to the horizontal change (the run) between any two points on the line.

• A rate of change compares a change in one quantity to a change in another quantity.

• Two methods to find the slope of a line.• Use the graph:

• Use the formula:

Example 1• Find the slope of the line shown.

Example 2 and 3

2) Find the slope of the line that passes through the points (-8, 3) and (4, -5).

3) Find the slope of the line that passes through the points (2, 9) and (-3, -4).

Example 4 and 5• Find the slope of the lines shown.

Vocabulary• The x-coordinate of a point where a graph crosses the x-

axis is an x-intercept.• The y-coordinate of a point where a graph crosses the y-

axis is a y-intercept.

Example 6• Identify the x-intercept and y-intercept of the graph.

Example 7 & 8• Identify the x-intercept and y-intercept of the graph.

• To find the x- and y-intercepts algebraically, given the equation of a graph:• x-intercept: set y=0 and solve for x.• y-intercept: set x=0 and solve for y.

Example 9

• Find the x-intercept and the y-intercept of the graph of 6x – 4y = 36

Example 10

Find the x-intercept and the y-intercept of the graph of 2y – 7x = 21
