MACROECONOMICS AND THE APPLIED ARTS:A PAUSE FOR REFLECTION
In the jumble of thoughts and actions that deeply concern us in these rather challenging times, I’ve tended to interpret this magazine and its contents as a pause for ref lection, one that will help us understand what fate contemporary society might have in store for the field once referred to as the Applied Arts; a pause to discern which direction should be followed by those who believe, like we do, that in any époque and under any constellation, beauty can save the world. This time, we are presenting “only” a dozen projects: not many compared to the quantity we’d become accustomed to in recent collections. However, this group of objects is anything but lacking in notable innovations, such as the coffee maker by Trimarchi, the multipurpose container by Big Game, the baby-elephant shaped table hook by Gooris, Miriam Mirri’s honey dipper, the centrepiece in high-performance mortar by Galbusera as well as the one by Odile Decq in metal, plus the Campana brothers’ project in rattan ... ... And we mustn’t forget to mention the version of “Anna G.” sporting a crown, the corkscrew designed by Mendini in 1994 is celebrating its twentieth anniversary this year. It has become an icon of the carefree ’90s and appearing in its lovable and magical new guise will help us choose, among the hundreds of projects we are working on, which ones will be best suited to the social and economic climate in 2015 and beyond.

Laura Polinoro
After “Little Red Riding Hood” here’s a new set of porcelain figurines that tell a beautiful story known around the world: “Alice in Wonderland”.
“The fairy tale tells the story of Alice, a British girl who falls asleep on the lawn of their country home during a hot summer afternoon in the company of her sister. Thus began a long and incredible dream, a fantasy world: Alice will find herself immersed in a whirlwind of creativity, madness and nonsense that gradually takes the form of a long journey, among improbable characters and situations without any apparent logic. The story lends itself to many interpretations, on different levels: it is definitely an on-going metaphorical allusion of reality and refers to subtle and ironic teachings, like an initiatory journey through fears or a form of overcoming in the liberating action of the unconscious, in a fascinating journey where everything is possible, where there is no limit and all the rules are turned upside down. Where space and time are undefined and interpreted in different ways by different people; they don’t represent a true reference because the only constant is paradox”.

Alessandro Mendini
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the “Anna G.” corkscrew. To celebrate this lucky object, one of the most iconic in our catalogue in recent decades, we asked Mendini to design two special versions for limited production in 2014.
“Few people are aware that the moniker of the corkscrew “Anna G.” comes from the name of a real person, Anna Gili, a designer from Umbria, the one who designs animals. It was Alberto Alessi’s idea to propose this name, finding similarities between the image of the corkscrew and that of the real-life Anna: the hair style and long neck, the gaze, the dance-like movements. At the beginning of this project, I set as my point of reference the mannequins by Oscar
Schlemmer, rooted in their dynamic theatre. And then I remembered, as a child, when my grandmother would open
a bottle of wine at the table, it always seemed like a good performance, a kind of ritual ballet: the turning of the head, the arms moving up
and down, the sound of the cork popping from the bottle. That’s when I decided on an anthropomorphic
object. I made a drawing of a ballerina, a female figure. It was
evident, though, that I had subliminally drawn a portrait of Anna; she had been the
inspiration. I had created an actual, bonafide portrait, a “design portrait.” Now, as this object enters its twentieth year, it must be
said that the name “Anna G.” truly did bring it luck. It was later presented officially at the Groninger Museum—which is also celebrating its twentieth anniversary— and since then, this corkscrew has enjoyed widespread exposure,
becoming a symbiotic household icon. And now, to mark the event, I came up with a
special edition. I’ve dressed “Anna G.” in a tribal dance mask, perhaps suited to the
forests and legends of Umbria, perhaps suited to the theatrical exploits of the Bauhaus. A new,
specially-designed performance for the occasion.”

Mario Trimarchi
In the collection of “designer coffee makers”, Alessi could not miss out on the visionary interpretation by the Sicilian designer Mario Trimarchi, who is always ready, willing and able to give us a good description of the project:
“Lately I have been very interested in sculpture. The kind of sculpture that subtracts matter from a solid block to discover the hidden forms within. I began from a cylindrical volume, eliminating the superf luous scales of aluminum one after another, in order to arrive at a coffee maker that was like an architectural sculptural, one that felt good your hands while it was being unscrewed.Flint, the material of our first recorded ancestral tools, was also used in this way, by subtraction, taking material away. “Obsidian” suggests a new kind of ergonomics for household objects and its form observes us, mysterious and timeless.”

Another “Objet Bijou”, from the soft touch of Miriam Mirri:
“The hexagonal shapes of a honeycomb form a beehive with two star-shaped f lowers on each end. Lightweight, its hollow interior is ready to scoop up some honey. Resting on a tapered stem, together the two steel elements form a single object to dip the desired amount of honey out of the jar, transfer it to another container and stir. “acacia” is designed to work with different consistencies of honey, especially the liquid or semi-liquid types used to sweeten hot drinks or accompany side dishes and desserts. It is dedicated to honey producers, consumers and all those who delight in the taste of this natural food’s many varieties.”

Enamel Paint
20 ALESSIVIEW ON F/W 2014
Claudia Raimondo
For several years now, we have been conducting research on finishing processes of metal with Claudia Raimondo. This time it has brought us to the edge of the world of lacquers and enamels. Techniques that have been used since ancient times, with the “Enamel Paint” collection, lacquering and enamelling have found an interesting contemporary interpretation.
Alberto Alessi
“Enamel Paint” is a new translucent, shiny finish; with colour highlights and a play of shadows that cast a veil over the metal surface, giving it colour tones reminiscent of the enamels seen in the precious objects traditionally associated with jewellery making. Bright colours and backgrounds produce a composite effect of colour, combining the natural quality of the material—the metal that appears in the background—and the notion of overlapping, of overlaying it with a bright colour. The proposed colour variations are:“Enamel Paint” blue. The traditional blue of precious objects. The blue of the classical decorations of the dinner table.“Enamel Paint” Pomegranate. A hypernatural colour, a cold red that reminds us of the freshness of nutritious fruits and the ruby tones of coulis, of vegetable juice.”

“Vime” (from the Latin vimen) is the Portuguese translation of cane, rattan in English. A material that has been used since ancient times for making furniture and baskets, it has now been taken over by the Campana brothers for a collection of objects which, in addition to the Lamp “Amanita” and the Centrepiece presented here, will be coming out over the course of 2015.
Alberto Alessi
“As an evolution of the Campana’s wicker collection, the Vime centrepiece, produced by Alessi, aims to recover handcraft traditions that are disappearing while giving them a contemporary vision and to incorporate them into an industrial process to rescue the human element in a highly mechanized company.”

FRÉDÉRIC GOORIS
“With a single stroke of a pen “l’orologio” fuses all the components into a simple and elegant bi-dimensional frame, capturing the very essence of the classic wrist watch design. The glass resting on top of the thin frame reveals the big dial that lies well below the surface. This creates an unexpected dimension to the thin frame, a metaphor for the extra dimension time adds to the world surrounding us. “l’orologio” is a classic passe-partout: clean, timeless and easy to read.”
