During an urbanism design course in New York City, students were asked to develop a master plan for the surrounding context of Williamsburg Bridge in Lower Manhattan. The Aquatic Rooms proposal densifies the unused bridge structures and under-bridge space, and duplicates the green Manhattan waterfront on the Brooklyn side. The towers are located at the main bridge structures. Upper levels offer housing, followed by office and commercial space. Floating platforms under the bridge allow various civic and institutional programs: gymnasium, public pools, theaters, parks, and a marina.

Scaling Apartments is a housing complex for the San Francisco community in Puerto Rico. As its name states, it scales its height acording to the surrounding context. The lowest parts adapt to a more suburban area, while the tallest react to a more dense avenue. The building per se contains a variety of apartments, from single to two stories, with one or two terraces on the highest floors. The inner part of the complex contains the circulation for the residences, thus all the apartments have a primary view to the context.

R A I C E S H O T E LOld San Juan Hotel

Raíces Hotel is a conservation project of three historic buildings in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico. The building that was proposed to be demolished, because of its rough conditions, contained a tree on the inside that served as its structure for floors and antique walls. The proposal creates a building that, like a tree, starts to invade the interior of the other three buildings. The main entrance of the hotel is through the historic buildings, afterwards one chooses to stay in the new or the historic buildings. A club is located on the rooftop, where guests can have a night life with a view of the Old San Juan Bay.

RIO Municipal Building Río Piedras, San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The concept for this project arised from the uncertainty of demolishing the region of southern Rio Piedras in Puerto Rico, and the building of a new master plan for the upcoming years. RIO Municipal Building is proposed as an anonymous “block” building that reacts to no actual surrounding context. The building per se is conformed of: an underground parking, commercial space, cafeteria, auditorium and office space. The building is organized around the central atrium that functions as a heat chimney for cross ventilation. Micro perforated aluminum sheets make up the “skin” of the building, for protection against direct sun light.

s

Living with the trees is a fully sustain-able Research Center, located in El Yunque Puerto Rico. By the use of solar panels, used-water filtration and cross ventilation, the project can sustain itself in the tropical forest. The project itself is divided into three parts: the first part is the entrance, where you begin to walk through the trees. After walking through the trees and exploring the forest from a ground perspective one then goes half way underground into the next “block buildings” where the forest can then be explored from a ground perspective. The final phase of the project are the two tow-ers, the living quarters for the scientists, that coexist with the trees on the lowest part of the site. In here, the research-ers can work, sleep, and wake up to the view above and in between the trees.

The Cloud CenterPolytechnic University’s new Student Center

The Cloud is a student center proposed for the Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico. The main idea is to turn the students into the new image of the university, substituting the old bell tower through the new building. The proposal includes a redesign of the complex’s center plaza, where the main entrance to the student center is located. Once inside, an elevator and a staircase rises five stories to the student center main lounge. There, a bridge connects the student center to the architecture school’s main building.

Drilled LampPVC + Drill + Light

Drilled Lamp, although a simple design, is a different way to light your house with. With indirect red light it reflects light onto the walls. Design with recyclable materials like an old PVC tube, a piece of acrylic, and an old power cord, it’s an affordable design with very common materials that provides a filtered and indirect light.
