LESLIE EXPEDITION1890-1891 (Frank Leslie)

In the spring of 1B90 er-ank Leslie's Illustrated New-,spaper sent an expedition to Alaska. Conducted by E.H.W~Wells, E.J.Glave and Alfred B Schanz, with Wells in comma*John Dalton and Frank~ln g-Price of S.F., were employed ashelpers. From S.F. to Pyramid Hbr. on Survey str. "Patt-erson", ChrJ.Kat "End'Lan s convoyed then up the ChilkatRiveT, over, the divide and do¥m the Tay~inl River.

At Kueawg lake Glave and Dalton crossed to headwatersof-AJ. sek and went------O:Ovm1t-in a canoe. The rest 'went downthe Yukon to Fortymile creek. Schanz became ill and wasreplaced by a Mr. De Haas. party went up 40-ml1e creek

--to-Tanana and-on up Tok Hiver. Low on-food so turned back.The-y went te Nu La-te , oeo ssed oor-tage to st. Michael.

Meanwhile Schanz recovered and with James A Frenchwent down the Yukon to st Michael. He and a Wm. C. Greenfield arrd som-e Eskimos, matte a bidarka trio from St. Mlcha.to Ikogmut,-p-orta@eft-to the Kuakokwdm , went down it andcoasted to Nushagak on Bristol Bay vilierehe met Wells addDarty wno-had-aIso coasted down previously.. Later Wells crossed the Alaska peninsula to Katmai

Schanz and a party went up the Nushagak, Mulchatna andKakhtul rivers, crossed to the head of Chulitna river and'descended to Clark Lake, which he named. From here theywent down its outlet, across Illiamna lake, and down theKvichak to Bristol bay. He then followed Wells across trepeninsula to ~ft~t¢t Katmai. .
