60 of our Years 3-6 students competed at the District Cross Country last
Thursday. Our school team performed admirably. There were 4 schools involved
in the day and we performed so well that we came 2nd
in the overall points scoring
trophy, just a few points behind Seymour College.
When you consider how much bigger some of the other schools are, that is a
terrific effort! It is a reflection of how committed our students were during
training throughout this term. Well done, kids. It is also a reflection on how well
they have been guided by their teachers and parents. Well done, Pucka!!
Special mention goes to Matilda Ingle who was the 9 and Under Age Group
Champion for the day! Well done, Matilda.
20 of our students performed so well, they have been chosen to represent the
school and the Seymour District at the Divisional Cross Country Carnival on
Tuesday the 2nd
of June. They are the students who finished in the top 8 in Under
10-12 years events (there is no Under 9 year events at Division). The event will
take place at the Yea Golf Course in Yea from 10.30 a.m.
until approximately 1:30 pm. Good luck kids!
Age Group Champion Matilda Ingle with her
winning medal.

their reading at home about 5 nights per week. Therefore, by now, most students
should have read at least between 70-75 nights. Well done if you have kept up!
***
Happy Birthday to Taylah
Studte, Lachlan Balmer and
Amy Franks who are having their
birthdays this week.
On behalf of the Puckapunyal
Primary School Community, we
wish them all a very Happy
Birthday!
The School Canteen is open for Lunch Orders this
Friday. Each and every Friday students can order
lunches from the school canteen. The menu will be
different each week. Please ensure that a paper bag
comes with the order. Please indicate on the lunch bag if
the money is in another sibling’s bag.
This week the menu is - Party Pies/Sausage Rolls $1.00 each or 3 for $2.50
Chocolate or Strawberry Milk $2.00 each
Apple or Orange Juice $1.50 each
No charge for tomato sauce
Healthy habit: Keep up the fruit intake over winter.
Mandarins, which will soon be in season, are high in
vitamins A and C, fibre and copper with some
calcium, magnesium and potassium. They’re also
easy to peel and make a great addition to school lunch
boxes.
Bush Dance: Thank you to everyone who supported
our BBQ fundraiser at the Bush Dance. We raised
about $660 dollars for the school. Have a terrific week!

Starring Artist Sophia Brooks
‘I am delighted to be chosen as the ‘Artist of the Moment’. My masterpiece was developed from patterned paper, mosaic squares, colored cardboard, textas, pom poms and stickers. I am most proud of the shoes and face because they are very detailed and colourful. Tristan Murphy told me the eyes were a great shape and that he liked the freckled cheeks. Those who know me know that I am Sophia Brooks from class 1/2 Challis. Please view my masterpiece in more detail when it is displayed in the foyer and in the school newsletter.’ Visual Art teacher Mrs A-W is very proud of Sophia!

At assembly this week Respect was announced as our School Value of the week. That means teachers are looking for
students who are demonstrating ‘Respect’ to be eligible for the Student of the Week award. We encourage parents to talk
to their students about our values throughout the year.
What is Respect? Year 6 student, Bryce Williams read out the meaning of Respect.
‘Being respectful is an attitude of caring and treating each other with dignity. It is speaking to and dealing with others in a
courteous manner.
Respect encompasses honouring the rules of your family or school. This helps to create a more peaceful and pleasant
environment to be in.
Self-respect is developed when you protect your own rights for things that are important to you. For example, the right to
privacy.’
Each week at assembly, SRC representatives remind
our students of a few important school rules. This week, SRC representatives, Lachlan Thompson
and Hailey Altas reminded our students of the
following rules:
Puddles are for ducks, not children.
Do not enter a classroom unless a teacher is
there.
Good manners cost nothing – they are free, use
them all the time!
Water tanks and garden areas are not for
playing in.
Please discuss these rules with your children to help
ensure that they understand.
Did you hear Abby
Chetcuti read her
writing about verbs at
assembly this week?
We did! She was
great!! Come along
and see who reads
next week.
In a perfect world, all of our students would be achieving well every day at school. We would love to have all children
succeeding and aiming high. However, that is not always the case. There are some things that we can all do to help.
We need your help.
We still have far too many students arriving ‘unready’ for school, each and every day. While most of our students and
their families are absolutely terrific at preparing for school, not all are.
Firstly, all of our students need to have a filling and nourishing breakfast before they get to school. That way they
can concentrate better and give their best right from the beginning of the day. Unfortunately, studies show that there is a
direct link to poor school performance and not eating breakfast!
Secondly, a good night’s sleep is essential. Some of our students are too tired before they start class. It is no
wonder they struggle with the classroom demands. Kids cannot concentrate or learn when they are tired.
School begins at 9 a.m. Still, too many students are not at school on time. This means that the late students miss out
on important teaching instructions. It also means that teachers have to stop teaching the class in order to direct the late
comer. Late students affect everybody!
We thank the families who are doing well to help in these areas. If anyone needs help, please let us know We can help.
Throughout 2015, our school will be reviewing some of our school policies. Some of these policies are of interest
to parents. If you would like to attend any of our policy review sessions, please do so. On Wednesday 3rd
June from
3:30-4:15pm, some staff will be reviewing our Head Lice Policy. Please come along if you would like to contribute to
the review.

Defence School Transition Aide Message Back at school: I trust that everyone has had a smooth and
satisfactory beginning to the school year. Changing schools,
beginning school for the first time and even returning for another
school year can be daunting for students and parents. It is great to see
parents eager to support their children at this time and be an integral
part of their education. If you have any concerns, or just feel like a
chat about school and your child, please find me!
SWAPP Select Program
I have information about the ADF partners career assistance program
if anyone is interested.
NEW UNIFORM
We have recently had a new shipment of uniform arrive that includes
shorts, tops, tracksuit pants and hats. Some parents have been waiting
on this to arrive.
Best wishes for the week.

Praise all attempts at writing and spelling. Talk about what your
child has written, have your child point to the writing and talk
about the message it carries.
Demonstrate how you write by recording the message too.
Let your child observe what you do when you try to spell
unknown words; eg say it, write it down, try again, check it with
a friend or in a dictionary.
Ask your child to read their work to other people, such as a friend or family
member.
Look for your child’s work in class books that are brought home to share.
Identify letters and words around you. Play with letters of the alphabet and find
letters and words in magazines that are of significance; eg. “That letter is in your
name. That’s the way you spell my name.”
Have fun writing with your child!
Regards, Mrs Challis
Please help support the Little Tackers Playgroup by
buying a yummy treat from their Bake Sale on Tuesday, June
2nd.
They will be under the Primary School flagpole straight after
school from 3:30pm. The money raised will be used to fund an
excursion for the little ones this term. Items will be priced
from just $1!
LEGO CLUB Lego Club will be held at the PDNC every Monday afternoon from 3.45pm.
It’s an opportunity for Primary School aged children to come along with
their friends and explore their creativity with our new Lego supplies. A light
afternoon tea will be supplied and the cost of the session will be $4.00.
Please come into the Centre to enrol your child for this fun program. Any
donations of Lego will be greatly appreciated.

OUR SCHOOL
Photographs and writing by Year 5/6 students Dylan, Matthew and Mackenzie District Cross Country On Thursday the 21st of May, 57 students participated in the District Cross Country. The 9s and 10s ran 2 km and the 11s and 12/13s ran 3km. Good job to all the students who ran in the District Cross Country. Well done to all the kids who made it to Division and good luck. Our school came second on the day which was a great effort.
Education Week & Bush Dance On Monday the 18th of May at assembly, every classroom did a special act. All year 5/6 students performed ‘Shoulders, Heads, Knees and Toes’ in Indonesian. The assembly was a showcase of what we could do as a class. On Tuesday there was an ‘Open Day’ where parents could come into classrooms at any time throughout the day. On Wednesday parents were invited to join the ‘Pucka Wanderers’ to go for a short walk around Pucka. On Thursday there was a ‘Family Bush Dance’ held at the Area Theatre. Our school provided dinner for families as a fundraiser. On Friday, years 3 – 6 students had the opportunity to ride up and down Sanananda Road at lunchtime with Mr. Warne.

Each week in the newsletter, we will give families a summary of the Teaching/Learning Focus for the week.
That can help families by: being aware of what classrooms are covering; with discussion topics at the dinner table when
discussing school (eg. ‘How are you going with addition in Numeracy this week?’); helping their children study at home,
etc. Parents have indicated that this information would be very useful. We also ask families to be aware that schools are
very busy places and events can be unpredictable at times. We therefore must remain flexible. That means, we can plan to
cover certain topics at particular times and have to change them according to arising needs.
Junior School – Preps/Foundation Rooms 3 & 6 Literacy: We are continuing to develop early writing skills with a focus on sounding out and using the golden words in
our writing. We will be focusing on the letter ‘Bb’ and the sound it makes.

verbs.

Clay Art On Thursday Ryan Cox, Tea Rose Porter and Mrs
Dixon went to Wallan to see the lovely clay birds that
the year five and sixes made. We also saw the tree of
life, clay leaves and flowers that were made by four
different schools. The schools participated in this event
to help other people. Our clay work will be on display
in the Wallan Family Care Centre. There were
representatives from other schools there also. We
listened to speeches and looked at the lovely art work.
The weather was not so great but we still had a great
time at the family centre. There were lots of great
people there and delicious food like muffins and
amazing brownie slices we also got to see photos of the
care centre and the clay tiles being built. Once we
finished looking, we had to get some petrol and get
back on the road to school.
