SURFACTANTSPerformance, aesthetics andsustainability: new Dow Corning® 55NAdditive eliminates the need forcompromise in high-performancecoatings

Dow Corning has introduced aninnovative performance-enhancingadditive that brings excellent abrasionresistance, levelling and slip to clearand pigmented paints, coatings andinks without generating excessivefoam or compromising the gloss orclarity of the finished coating. NewDow Corning 55N Additive has alsobeen found to improve coatinghardness and recoatability in certainwater-based coating applications.Paints, coatings and inks with a highcoefficient of friction (CoF) aresusceptible to damage both duringapplication and throughout the life ofthe coated piece. Dow Corning 55NAdditive reduces CoF without thepoor recoatability, gloss reduction andfoaming problems commonlyassociated with CoF-reducingadditives. A reactive silicone glycolsurfactant with carbinol functionality,Dow Corning 55N Additive isdesigned for use in paints, coatings, and inks for wood, metal, and plastic. It performs well in water-based,solvent-based, and UV-curablesystems and is compatible with awide range of resins, including alkyd, acrylic, epoxy, and polyurethane.“With its low volatile organic content, environmentally acceptable solventand multiple benefits for water-basedsystems, Dow Corning 55N Additive isan excellent choice for manufacturerswho want to differentiate themselves inthe marketplace by the performance, aesthetics and sustainability of theirpaints, coatings and inks,” said ChrisWall, Dow Corning Global CoatingsMajor Market Leader.

Kao targets global sales ofsurfactants for aqueous auto paints

Kao Corp is aiming at the globalmarket for its water-based car paintadditives, led by its reactive surfactantLatemul PD-104 that produces strongand glossy coatings. The surfactantcomplies with the standards of theworld’s main industrialized nations. The material also solves problemscommon in non-reactive surfactantssuch as reduced coating strength andwater resistance, thanks to the actionof active agents in emulsions. PD-104works with a number of acrylicmonomers to achieve highly water-resistant polymers. The reactivesurfactant also makes inorganicpigments highly dispersible in water-based carriers, enabling themanufacture of a number of water-based paints. It also offers goodpigment dispersions in emulsions, giving coatings a high-end glossyappearance.

Miyoshi Soap developing low-costgemini surfactants

Miyoshi Soap is working to developinexpensive hetero-geminisurfactants, which remain highlyeffective even at low concentrationsand low temperatures compared withordinary surfactants. Because of thecomplicated processes used toproduce them, existing geminisurfactants are expensive and arethus only used in luxury-brandcosmetics. The company aims tobring down the cost by developinghetero-gemini surfactants from oleicacid esters.

AIST expanding development of newbiosurfactants

The National Institute of AdvancedIndustrial Science and Technology(AIST) has introduced MEL-B, a newhomologue of the biosurfactantmannosylerythritol lipids. The newmaterial creates vesicles in oil to yieldwater-in-oil emulsions for waterdispersion, which can be applied asbase materials for lotions andcosmetics creams. Biosurfactants aregaining wider acceptance as next-generation, eco-friendly surfactantsdue to their superior biocompatibilityand biodegradability qualities thatenable small-volume application toachieve performance comparable tosynthetic surfactants. AIST has beenco-developing MEL-B as skincarematerials with Toyobo Co.
