Student Gardening 

Student gardens open March through November  

Currently no greenhouse space is available for students 

Could provide greenhouse space on farm acreage if a new greenhouse was provided. 

Currently student gardens are leased out for $10 a year.  This could be increased.  

Neil Mecham is the point of contact for Student Garden Program this program. 

Not so much activity during the summer but this could change if Residential Hall is utilized during the summer.  

May not be any areas on site with full sun suitable for gardening due to trees and shading but will confirm when final survey is obtained. 

Opportunity to provide designated student garden plots for residential hall providing a direct connection to agriculture and food. 

Formalize as student garden, consider water source, and utilize compost from residential hall kitchens 

Potential for container gardening if garden plots are not available on immediate site. 

May need more rot resistant species for containers. 

Edible landscaping continues to be an option with foundation plantings containing heritage vegetable varieties such as asparagus, quince, rhubarb, raspberries, blackberries etc.  

Could also integrate native fruit and nut trees such as pawpaw, hazelnuts, persimmon. 

Berea College Agricultural History 

Opportunity to Chronicle Agricultural History of Berea College in new residence hall 

Could feature native American artifacts in new residential hall especially if found on site 

Agricultural Land 

Currently have 100 acres certified organic  400 acres conventional 

Alternative Waste Treatment 

Relatively high costs of fertilizer, could offset a portion of the cost of the compost toilets 

Anaerobic Digestion as option for sewage Treatment. 

Landscaping 

Opportunity to self‐perform landscape with grounds crew and around 20 students. M2D has had experience with this on a previous project.
