Clim-Dev-Africa: A pan-African Partnership
A joint initiative by Africa’s three largest institutions mandated by the Heads of State
An African response to the urgent challenge that lacking climate information poses to Africa’s development
Seeks to overcome the lack of necessary information, analysis and options required by policy and decision-makers at all levels, across multiple sectors
A strategic complement to direct climate adaptation, mitigation and natural resources management programmes
ClimDev-Africa Goal: To construct a solid climate information foundation
Build solid science and observational infrastructure for widely available climate information, packaging and dissemination
Enable working partnerships between governments, private sector, civil society and vulnerable communities through informed decision-making, awareness and advocacy
Strengthen knowledge frameworks to support and integrate actions required with quality analysis for decision support and management practice

Partnership Roles and Responsibilities
A holistic programme integrating political engagement, expert-driven knowledge generation & investments
The Climate Change and Desertification Unit: Political leadership & coordination of Africa’s common position on climate change
The African Climate Policy Centre : Programmatic activities to develop climate policy capacity through knowledge generation, advocacy and advisory services
The ClimDev Special Fund : Financing demand-led investments on the ground for generation and use of climate information
Programme Partners on the Steering Committee
The Programme includes partnerships with leading African and non-African climate and development specialized institutions
Regional : AMCEN, AMCOW, RECs

The ClimDev Special Fund (CDSF)
Pools resources to implement projects that strengthen institutional capacities of national & sub-regional bodies to formulate and implement effective climate-sensitive policies:
Generation, wide dissemination and use of reliable and quality climate information
Generation of quality analysis for use in development planning
Implementation of pilot adaptation practices to demonstrate the value of mainstreaming climate information in development planning and practices

Start-up activities have been undertaken to allow donors to contribute to the Fund 2012-2014 work programme Operational Procedures Manual Pipeline of potential projects to be funded
The Fund is ready to begin operations as soon as an initial UA 20 million (EUR 22.4 million) is committed, in accordance with the Instrument
