2014 Ada News Football
Prediction Race
Adagood football team out of a tough district (4A-3). We’re glad to have them at home.”
Weber said the Cougars can expect a whole lot of everything from the Eagles.
“It looks like they do a whole lot of things on both sides of the football. They run a whole lot of differ-ent fronts on defense and a whole bunch of different stunts. Offensively, they run a whole bunch of sets and a whole bunch of plays. They’re difficult to pre-pare for on both sides of the ball,” he said.
Weatherford is likely to feed Ada a heavy dose of senior running back Jacob Hoffman (5-8, 200).
“He plays middle linebacker and tailback for them, and I believe he’s also an outstanding wres-tler,” Weber said. “They’re big and physical. I’m sure they’re going to have a similar game plan that Harrah did and try to make us eat the football.”
Running the show for the Eagles is versatile quar-terback Isaac Fuller (5-10, 190). The Weatherford line is anchored by two-way player Dyllan Haworth (6-1, 275).
Weber hopes to avoid the same type of seesaw affair the Cougars were engaged in with Harrah.
“We don’t want this to turn into a scoring contest. We need to play better on the defensive side of the ball,” he said.
Now that playoff time is here, Weber feels like his team is talented enough for a deep run.
“I think if we play like we’re capable of playing, we’ll be a tough out for anybody,” he said. “You’ve been banging on people for 14 weeks, and it takes 17 to go all the way to the state finals. You have to be a little lucky and stay healthy.”
4A BracketThe Ada-Weatherford winner was originally
scheduled to meet the Oologah-Sallisaw winner in next week’s quarterfinals. But things have changed since the original bracket was released, according to Ada High Athletic Director Mike Anderson.
“(Wednesday) morning, Oologah-Talala admin-istration self-reported that an error was made and an academically ineligible player was inadvertently allowed to participate in football contests at the beginning of the season which required the team to forfeit two district contests,” Anderson said via e-mail. “After considering the forfeiture of the two district contests, it was determined by the school and the OSSAA that the final district standings placed Wagoner in the first position and Oologah-Talala in the second position of 4A-3.”
Now, in the updated bracket, the Ada-Weatherford victor would tangle with the Wagoner-Sallisaw win-ner in the second round.
Cold is coolWeber said he doesn’t believe Friday’s forecast of
chilly weather will have any bearing on the playoff game at Norris Field.
“The weather has changed, like it always does in the playoffs. It’s going to be cold. I’ve never bought into having to get acclimated to the heat and acclimated to the cold. I don’t know that you get used to it. When it’s cold and you’re standing around, you’re going to be cold. It doesn’t matter that you’ve done it for a couple of days that week.
“As long as that north wind doesn’t blow real hard, I don’t see the weather being a factor. Wind and precipitation is what’s always a factor in foot-ball games. Sometimes that makes people more apt to turn the ball over.”
Who’s No. 1?Ada senior Quinton Gregory, who normally wears
No. 29, will again take over the No. 1 jersey against Weatherford as the Special Teams Player of the Week. Gregory had three solo tackles on kickoffs against Harrah.
“I don’t know how many times he’s been No. 1. He’s just impressive to watch on special teams. Not only does he usually get in on the tackle, he also seems like he punishes somebody on the way down there,” Weber said.
Playoff Notes: The Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association and all host schools will honor veterans by providing free admission to any veteran and one guest to the first round of playoff games. The OSSAA notes that veterans can gain admission by showing their driver’s license, which has a seal indicating the person is a veteran, a veterans ID card or any other form of verification. ... All tickets are gen-eral admission, and ticket prices will be $5 for adults and students. Other than the special accommodations for veterans noted above, the only pass that will be accepted is the 2014-2015 OSSAA Playoff pass. Bands, cheerleaders and dance teams in uniform will be admitted as well.
