Flax Seed

Brown vs. Golden

Brown flax seed is comprised of about 59.0% fatty acids, whereas golden flax seed is comprised of about 51.0%

• Also known as linseed

• Native to the region extending from the eastern Mediterranean to India

• One of the oldest fiber crops in the world

• Flax was extensively cultivated in ancient Ethiopia and Egypt

• Two main types of flax seeds:- Brown- Golden or yellow

Flax Seed

Composition

• 28.0% dietary fiber- 7.0-10.0% soluble fiber & 11.0-18.0% insoluble fiber

• 40.0% fat - 73.0% polyunsaturated fatty acids & 21.0% protein

• >50.0% Alpha-Linolenic Acid (ALA)- Richest plant source of omega-3 fatty acids

• Calcium, iron, and potassium

• Phytosterols • Vitamins E and B• Lignans

The perfect means to incorporate omega 3 fatty acids derived from plants into cosmetic applications

Flax Seed Oil

Fatty Acid Composition

• Arachidic Acid (0.0–0.5%)

• Palmitoleic Acid (0.0–0.5%)

• Eicosenoic Acid (0.0–0.6%)

• Stearic Acid (2.0–3.0%)

• Palmitic Acid (4.0–6.0%)

• Oleic Acid (10.0–22.0%)

• Linoleic Acid (12.0–18.0%)

• Alpha-Linolenic Acid (60.0–71.0%)

α-Linolenic Acid (ALA)

• Essential fatty acid

• Can withstand temperatures up to 350°F

• The most abundant unsaturated component of several drying oils- Ideal for binding pigments & nail varnishes - The hydrophobic (water-repelling) nature of the resulting hydrocarbon-

based material is advantageous for locking moisture in the skin- Can help with problem skin

• A polyunsaturated n−3 (omega-3) fatty acid- A carboxylic acid with an 18-carbon chain and three cis double bonds

• The body converts α-Linolenic Acid into Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA) and Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA)

- Reduces inflammation

• Low concentrations of ALA can cause dermatitis and skin lesions

Linoleic Acid (LA)

• Essential fatty acid

• Found in the lipids of cell membranes- Required to maintain proper membrane structure

• An unsaturated n-6 fatty acid (18:2(n-6))- A carboxylic acid with an 18-carbon chain and two cis double bonds

• Linoleic acid deficiency causes mild skin scaling, hair loss, poor wound healing and problem skin

• Benefits to the skin: Soothing Reduces problem skin Moisturization

Problem skin is the result of disturbed keratinization of the follicular infundibulum which is caused by low levels of Linoleic Acid in the sebum

Oleic Acid (OA)

• Monounsaturated omega-9 fatty acid

• Provides excellent health benefits- It can lower total cholesterol level and raise levels of high-density

lipoproteins (HDLs) while lowering low-density lipoproteins (LDLs), also known as the “bad” cholesterol

• Essential for the production of other fatty acids, and fatty acid derivatives

• A moderate hydrophilic (water-attracting) emulsifierDid you know?

Oleic acid is emitted by the decaying corpses of a number of insects to indicate danger to living insects

Oleic Acid (OA) + Stratum Corneum (SC)

• Stratum Corneum (SC) lipids are arranged as membrane structures in the SC interstices

- Comprised of ceramides, cholesterol, and free fatty acids

• These membranes subserve a number of functions- Formation of an essentially water-tight barrier

- Allows complete control of the internal water balance of the body

• Topical application of Oleic Acid has the demonstrated ability to accelerate wound healing

AC Flax Seed Oil

• Cold Pressed - no solvent extraction

• Golden, oily liquid

• Dry upon application

• Excellent binder for decorative cosmetics (drying oil)

Drying Oils• An oil that hardens to a

tough, solid film after a period of exposure to air

• The oil hardens through a chemical reaction in which the components crosslink by the action of oxygen

Benefits

• Skin care benefits: Moisturization Soothing Reduce problem skin Enhance barrier function

• Hair care benefits: Conditioning Nourishing Shine enhancement
