Low WeightPlastic pipes weigh approximately5 times less than metal. This can leadto weight savings of several tonnesper ship. Allowing more cargo andlower running costs.
No CorrosionProblems with external corrosion or inter-nal encrustation are eliminated by usingplastic piping system.
Speedy InstallationSave time during the installation process, plastics lend themselves to pre-fabricati-on which can reduce installation timeson board drastically. The speedy jointingtechniques employed by plastics alsoallow jointing with limited tooling andno power source in very constrainedspaces.
Efficient MaintenanceOn board alterations or repairs can beconducted efficiently on plastics. Nomajor specialised personnel or toolingare required to enable reliable jointingand installation of plastics on the shipitself.

ABS and COOL-FITAn halogen free, solvent cemented com-
plete plastic piping system, similar to PVC but more robust, better low temperature resis-
tance complying to the toxicitytest according to IMO A.753(Ý8) andSOLAS. Ideal for fresh and sea watercooling, air conditioning, drinking water, indirect refrigeration and brine systems.Available also pre-insulated ¢00% waterand vapour tight, no condensation build-up.
PP-H and PE-Ý00Fusion jointed systems offering goodflexibility, the fusion jointing techniquesare simple and quick, offering excellentreliability.PP-H is ideal for yachts or smaller vesselswhere flexibility and weight are primaryconcerns. PE-Ý00 (electro-fusion ELGEFPlus) is ideal for larger dimensionedsystems such as bilge, ballast and airvent lines.
PVC-U/PVC-CThe plastic systems with the longesttradition, Georg Fischer first producedPVC in Ý957. Since then due to PVC‘sexcellent value for money it has grownto be the most commonly used materialin industrial systems world-wide.Primarily used for drinking water treat-ment and swimming pools on ships, technical water, cold potable water andgeneral fresh water services are alsogood applications for PVC.

AQUASYSTEM in the raw materialPP-R or as a multi-layer ALU system offersanother solution for hot and cold waterservices.
CouplingsA stainless steel two-bolt coupler widelyused in shipbuilding, mining, wastewatertreatment and other industries. For fast, simple and reliable connecting or repairof all kinds of pipes, metallic or plastic.Flexible, repair and restraint couplings, for pressures up to 64 bar and tempera-tures from –30 °C to +125 °C.
PRIMOFIT and malleable iron fittingsThreaded malleable iron fittings fromGeorg Fischer have a tradition of 200years behind them. For ship building theyare ideally suited for sprinkler systemsand general mechanical services onboard ships. PRIMOFIT is a compressionfitting for end load or flexible connec-tions, for metal to metal connectionssaving time and space.
Pipe ToolsEfficient, high quality installations withstate-of-the-art tube/pipe fusion, cutting, beveling ans bending tools for all pipedimensions and all materials (metaland plastics). Rental pools, service, demonstrations and sales worldwide.

Application Areas for Plastic Pipeson ShipsThe «International Maritime Organisa-tion» IMO has published a guideline foruse of plastic pipes on ships, namelyIMO Resolution A.753 (18), originallyreleased in 1993. This document outlinesthe tests required before the system canbe considered for approval from thevarious classification societies. The tests outlined cover primarily thefollowing categories; flame endurance, flame spread, smoke generation, toxicity, fire protection coatings and generalinstallation or worthiness tests eg. exter-nal load, connections etc.The resolution contains a matrix definingwhich tests are required for a particularpipe line in which location area of theship. The allowable application areas forplastics on ships are fundamentally non-essential systems, primarily fresh and seawater lines but also air/gas ventingsystems, compressed and service air aswell as non essential oil lines.
Typical Applications for Plastic PipeSystems on Ships:º water treatment for drinking and
swimming pool waterº cold and hot potable waterº fresh water cooling for example
air conditioningº sea water cooling (non essential)º bilge linesº fresh water service and coolingº general brine lines, also for
refrigeration systems
º air and gas ventingº compressed and general service air
(non essential)
Flame Spread CharacteristicsThis test is done in accordance withASTM D.635-91. «Rate of Burning andTime of Burning of Self-Supported Plas-tics in a Horizontal Position». Samplescorresponding to the relevant wall thick-ness of the pipes are exposed to anopen flame for 30 seconds. The timeand extent of burning are measured. Please note: if the sample does not burn100 mm in 30 seconds the time andextent of burning are written into the testcertificate, if the sample burns more than100 mm then the rate of burning ismeasured and reported in the certificate. The only plastic which can achieve noflame spread is PVC-C. Other materialssuch as ABS achieve no flame spreadwhen using a fire protection in the caseof ABS a flame retardant insulation fromArmstrong, namely Armaflex A/F.All standard plastics, other then thePVC’s, are classified as either normal oreasy burning. PVC-U is self-extinguishing(i.e. after removal of the flame the PVCwill extinguish itself), PVC-C is flameretardant to most international test pro-cedures (i.e. B1 to DIN 4102, or M1 toNF rance).
Toxicity and Smoke GenerationThese requirements apply only to pas-senger bearing ships in accommodation, service and control spaces. The PVC’swill not pass the toxicity test due to their
Fishing Trawlers withplastics to increaseload bearing capacity.

Fishing Trawlers for:Indirect Cooling: RSW (Refrigerated SeaWater): Ice GenerationUse of ABS and PE on fishing trawlers isbecoming more and more widespreaddue to the weight savings incurred fromusing a plastic system. Georg Fischer hasvarious references in this field from Ice-land, Sweden, Scotland and Australasia. Please consult Georg Fischer for furtherdetails.
ApprovalsGeorg Fischer has a whole range ofapprovals from all the major classificati-on societies, namely Lloyds Register, DetNorske Veritas, American Bureau ofShipping, Bureau Veritas, Rina etc.Other approvals, for example NKK,CNS, US Coast Guard etc. are either inwork or can be applied for on demand.
