A protest is when people come together and march in the streets to stand up for something they believe in, because they want to make their voices heard, and because they want to enact change to make things better.

People also protest and march to stand up for themselves and for others to be treated fairly, with love, respect and kindness regardless of the color of the skin, gender, gender identity, disability, or any other part of their identity.

Currently, people are standing up for the fair treatment of our black communities by protesting peacefully. Last week, George Floyd was a man who lost his life while being arrested. This has happened before and it is unfair. People are angry, sad and tired of historical injustice. They are asking for the people responsible to be held accountable for their actions. There are many community leaders, neighbors and people all over the world who are standing up and asking for positive change.

People who are protesting also support a movement called Black Lives Matter. A group of agents of change and inspiring leaders created this movement to make sure that people celebrate, support, and protect black lives and black communities.

At Meridian, we talk about caring for ourselves and for each other. We have learned how to recognize when something is not right or fair. We also know how to stand up for ourselves and for our friends when they are not treated with kindness and care. That is called being an Ally. People who are protesting are standing up for themselves, and there are also allies protesting and standing up for others. With this current situation, you may feel like you want to do something. Protesting is one of many ways to take action.
