1957 Treaties of Rome Establishes the European Economic Community (EEC),

The European Atomic Energy Community (EURATOM)

1985 Single European Act

It was signed at Luxembourg on 17 February

1986, and at The Hague on 28 February 1986.

It came into effect on 1 July 1987, under

the Delors Commission

The Act set the European Community an objective of establishing

a single market by 31 December 1992, and codified European

Political Cooperation, the forerunner of the European

Union's Common Foreign and Security Policy.

1992 Treaty of the European Union (Maastricht

Treaty) as signed on 7 February 1992 by the

members of the European Community

in Maastricht, Netherlands. On 9–10

December 1991, the same city hosted

the European Council which drafted the treaty

The Treaty of the EU created the three pillars structure of

the European Union and led to the creation of the single European

currency, the euro.

First pillar: Community integration method

Second pillar: Intergovernmental cooperation method

Third pillar: Intergovernmental cooperation method

2001 Treaty of Nice The Treaty of Nice reformed the institutional structure of the

European Union to cope with the eastward expansion2004 Treaty of a “Constitution of Europe” – signed

in Rome on 29 October 2004 but not yet

ratified

It would have replaced the existing European Union

treaties with a single text, given legal force to the Charter of

Fundamental Rights, and expanded Qualified Majority

Voting.

1950

On 9th May 1950, French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman gave a speech in

which he publicly proposed the idea of a European Coal and Steel

Community (ECSC). The objective was to establish long lasting peace in

Europe.

1951The ECSC was founded. Members were Belgium, the Federal Republic of

Germany, France, Italy, Luxembourg and the Netherlands.

1957These six countries set up another club, the European Economic Community

(EEC), for deeper and broader cooperation.

1973 Denmark, Ireland and the United Kingdom joined the EEC.

1981 Greece joined the EEC.

1986 Portugal and Spain joined the EEC.

1993 The EEC was replaced by the European Union (EU).

1995 Austria, Finland and Sweden joined the EU.

2002 The euro (€) became the official currency of 12 EU countries (now 17).

2004Czech Republic, Estonia, Cyprus, Latvia, Lithuania, Hungary, Malta, Poland,

Slovakia and Slovenia joined the EU.

2007 Bulgaria and Romania joined the EU.

2013 Croatia became the 28th member state of the EU.

• They must have a functioning market economy and the capacity to cope with competition and market forces in the EU.

• They must have the ability to take on and implement effectively the obligations of membership, including adherence to the aims of political, economic and monetary union.

• They must have the consent of the EU institutions and EU member states.

• They must have the consent of their citizens – as expressed through approval in their national parliament or by referendum.
