FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH APRIL 10, 2013 WINCHESTER, VA.
VOL. 74 NO. 7
A Loving & Caring Church Transforming God’s Vision Into Action
This year’s college basketball season has come to a close.
The “Final Four” was held this past Saturday and Monday.
Admittedly, I didn’t watch a whole lot of it on television. I
really didn’t have a “rooting interest” in any of the teams.
That was not the case almost 30 years ago.
As most of you know, I’m an enthusiastic University of Virginia basketball fan. I’ve had more
than a passing interest in the team since my undergraduate days there in the early 1970’s. In
1984, the UVA team did the impossible. Minus Ralph Sampson, the three-time national Player
of the Year who had graduated in 1983, the team nevertheless had made it to that year’s
NCAA “Final Four.” One of only four teams with a chance to win the national championship,
they had done it with a combination of shrewd coaching, intelligent, patient play, and more
than their share of good fortune.
It all came to an end on that Saturday, when they lost in the national semi-finals to the
University of Houston, 49-47 in overtime. It was painful for me to watch. But even in that
game they had a good chance to win. It was the kind of game they had been winning - close,
pressure-packed, everything hanging on the final seconds. The game plan - the pre-game
strategy was unfolding as the team had hoped. But they lost. As Coach Terry Holland put it,
“the script was there” - but it didn’t happen.
That comment by the coach caused me to wonder - “what is the script for the church?” What
kind of church, what kind of people are we to be? Certainly our “script” should include:
excitement about who God is; gratitude for His blessings; an attitude of humility that He
calls us His children; a willingness to share our faith; consistent support of the church’s
ministry; and, a readiness to serve. We are called to follow the example of the risen Christ.
This is a part of the “script” that God has given us. And just like a “Final Four” basketball
game - if you will pardon the pun - “the ball is in our court.” May God grant us the grace,
that as a church we may “make it happen.” To His honor and glory.
Special thanks to everyone who had a part in our Holy Week and Easter services. It was truly
a blessing to share in these experiences of worship.

Spring Study Group
The Spring Thursday Morning Bible Study is focusing on the Epistles of John (I, II, III John).
In these letters the apostle John says ex-actly what Christians need to hear today – announcing that God is light, truth, love, and life. There are nine weekly sessions beginning March 14th. Each session is held from 10:00 to 11:30 in the lower auditorium. There is no charge for the study books. The class is led by Bob Stainback and Lori
Pendleton.
The Word Sunday School Class Continues New Study
The Word class continues the study entitled A Purpose Driven Life. Pastor Rick Warren's best seller is celebrating it's 10-year anniversary with a newly released copy containing two new chapters. Even if you have studied this before we encourage you to take a fresh look at it. After all, are you the same person with the same goals and purposes as 10 years ago? Some of you were mere babies at the time! Cost of the book is $12. We want to support the newly released version, since most of the money will be given to charity. We are very excited about this study and hope you can join us!
Contact John or Jan Habeck 336-5158 and 5159 for more information. Also, please note, The Word class now meets in the CEB basement.

Let Us Play (part 1)
How Free Time Ignites Imagination And Makes Kids Smarter
Free, unstructured play happens when your child isn’t following any rules or guidelines, like when he’s busy building forts, pretending to be a superhero, or finger-painting. It cultivates independence, imagination, creativity, and problem-solving skills says Kenneth R. Ginsburg M.D., a pediatrician at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and author of a special report on play from the American Academy of Pediatrics. Free play also works wonders on stress. “Kids deal with their anxiety and fears through free play. It’s their natural means of building resiliency.” Neuroscientists say that play is fundamental to every kind of learning, and it even physically shapes the brain. The more playful an animal is, scientists point out, the bigger the brain is.
Sadly, this type of play has been on the decline since the 1950’s, due in part to changing ideas on education and growing fears about letting kids be unsupervised. Though more parents are recognizing the importance of free play, they’re still struggling to let it happen naturally. “Scheduling free play kind of defeats the purpose,” says Dr. Ginsburg. “It shouldn’t be another thing to add to your to-do list and feel guilty about.” Fortunately, with a little know-how, you can make free play an organic and exciting part of your child’s world. Here’s how:
Praise Her Play Chances are that your child already engages in some amount of free play every day. Encourage more of it by regularly telling your little one what a great job she’s doing. “I’m so impressed that you built that tower all by yourself!” or “What a great game you invented!” Resist the urge to give suggestions like, “Here, why don’t you use a towel instead of that sheet as a cape?” Your kid’s play is perfect just the way it is.
Offer Open-Ended Toys The simplest toys allow for the highest creativity. Playthings such as blocks, dolls, and balls that can be used in more than one way encourage imagination better than things like coloring books or board games, which have specific rules to follow.
Cut Back On Extracurriculars Stick to one sport or kiddie class per season. You may think you’re doing your child a favor by signing her up for Spanish classes, baseball, and art all at the same time, but having an organized activity every afternoon will really zap her energy for any free play. In fact, research shows that kids whose time is over-organized are more likely to become anxious and depressed.
Invite the Neighbors Encourage your kids to play in your front yard. We’ve become a backyard society, and that can prevent kids from having the kind of spontaneous play with neighborhood friends that you probably remember from your own childhood. One huge advantage to neighborhood play is that kids end up hanging out with pals of different ages. The big kids learn to nurture and look out for the little ones, and the small kids have to learn to keep up. As a group, they have to devise creative games that include everyone.
This column continues in the April 24th Tie with more suggestions to help inspire imagination through free play.

“His Eye is On The Sparrow”
Why should I feel discouraged? Why should the shadows come, Why should my heart be lonely, and long for heaven and home.
When Jesus is my portion. My constant friend is He: His eye is on the sparrow and I know He watches me.
“Let not your heart be troubled”, His tender word I hear, And resting on His goodness, I lose my doubt and fear;
Though by the path He leadeth, but one step I may see; His eye is on the sparrow and I know He watches me.
Whenever I am tempted, whenever clouds arise, When songs give place to sighing, when hope within me dies,
I draw the closer to Him, from care He sets me free; His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.
Chorus: I sing because I’m happy, I sing because I’m free,
For His eye is on the sparrow, And I know He watches me.
His Eye Is On The Sparrow is a wonderful hymn that reminds us of God’s faithful love. This hymn about the simplest of birds truly reminds us how deep God’s love is for us. The text was inspired by Matthew 6:26 “Look at the birds of the air; they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?”
Here is a quote of the inspiration for the writing of this hymn by its author, Civilla Martin, “Early in the spring of 1905, my husband and I were sojourning in Elmira, New York. We con-tracted a deep friendship for a couple by the name of Mr. and Mrs. Doolittle - true saints of God. Mrs. Doolittle had been bedridden for nigh twenty years. Her husband was an incurable cripple who had to propel himself to and from his business in a wheel chair. Despite their af-flictions, they lived happy Christian lives, bringing inspiration and comfort to all who knew them. One day while we were visiting with the Doolittles, my husband commented on their bright hopefulness and asked them for the secret of it. Mrs. Doolittle’s reply was simple: ‘His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.’”

Voice Recognition
I was preaching on the fourth Sunday of Easter, when many churches hear the gospel about Jesus as the Good Shepherd. I explained how Middle Eastern shepherds, of old and today, call their sheep from a commingled flock; across the hillside in various tones is heard:
“Manah! Manah!” — Arabic for “Follow me!”
I imitated this call throughout my sermon, pointing out that Jesus also calls us in a distinct voice. Suddenly, from the back of the sanctuary, my 16-month-old son unexpectedly helped make my point. He answered my fourth or fifth “Manah!” with his own little “Manah!” and the congregation — and preacher — burst into
laughter.
My son recognized his mommy’s voice from the pulpit, and I, without a doubt, knew the response came from my child, not another. Likewise, Jesus knows us individually. We learn his voice by listening to it daily, and there is true delight each time Shepherd and sheep
come together.

Dear Parents and Friends of First Baptist Church,
At a time when the cost of running any private organization/school is
on the rise, fundraisers have become an important source of income.
At “Son” Shine Learning Center, we use raised funds to offset the cost
of educational materials and updates to our classrooms. Our goal last
year was to raise $4,000 and we raised $4,000! We thank you for your
contributions as it allowed us to purchase eight Dell computers for our
Computer Lab. We were also able to purchase new software to go along
with these computers. Studies have shown that starting a child on the road
to computer literacy, from an early age, will mean that they are always at
ease and comfortable with technology, and readily able to embrace the
further changes which will undoubtedly follow in the 21st Century.
With your help, our 5th annual “Son” Shine Love Offering will continue through Thursday,
May 23, 2013. This takes the place of multiple events that require door-to-door sales and the
purchase of candy, candles, popcorn, and wrapping paper. Our goal this year is to raise $4,200.
Our plan for these funds is to purchase new teaching materials, add one component to our
playground, purchase additional gravel for the playground, and offset the cost of CPR training
for staff members.
Every contribution, whatever the amount, goes directly to the SLC Fund and your donations
are tax deductible. Thank you very much for your continued support.
In His service,
Sherry Schryver, Director
“Son” Shine Learning Center

The Song of the Lilies
The lilies say on Easter day, “We give, we give, We breathe our fragrance on the air We shed our beauty everywhere! We give, we give.” The lilies say on Easter day, “We live, we live. In darkness buried long we lay; The sun awoke us one spring day! We live, we live.” The lilies say on Easter day, “Give, children, give.” Give love and kindness everywhere; They truly live who truly share! Give, children, give.” — Lucy Wheelock

Critical Need Faith In Action is in critical need of volunteer drivers. As a non-profit that provides free transportation to/from medical appointments for those with no other means of transportation, a corps of volunteer drivers (with training and orientation to FIA service protocols) serve area residents who are registered clients of Faith In Action. Priority is given to those in need of life-saving services such as dialysis and chemotherapy. There is no minimum requirement of hours or mileage; even one-way rides help the schedule tremendously.
Additionally, an office assistant is needed. This would entail donating 10 - 15 hours a week to manage a light load of phone calls and data entry. Hours are flexible.
Interested in volunteering? Please call (540) 536-1006
"Son" Shine Learning Center and the Budget
"Son" Shine Learning Center gains all revenue from tuition and registration fees. All expenses come from purchasing educational material, programming, and salaries. Members of First Baptist Church and "Son" Shine Learning Center families are asked to prayerfully consider a yearly Love Offering contribution. In the past several years this Love Offering, combined with help from FBC, has gone toward the purchase of the play structure on the FBC playground, new cabinets, tile flooring, cabinetry, blinds for all windows, and most recently, eight new Dell computers for our Computer Lab, as well as new software. Our outdated computers were donated to Literacy Volunteers. On average, we serve 80+ children per year. Of that number, there are children who would not otherwise be able to attend, who are awarded an annual scholarship, to cover fees for preschool.
We now have a Tuition Agreement that is signed by all parents by mid-October, which has given us the assurance of tuition income through the end of the school year. This has improved our ability to budget for expenses, which includes salaries for 9 teachers, 8 assistants, and a director. Our offerings include music class, computer lab, and chapel twice a month with Pastor Fletcher. We aim to balance our tuition income, combined with offerings, with our expenses, based on a full enrollment for the coming academic year. Sherry's enthusiasm for the future plans of "Son" Shine Learning Center is balanced by her desire to balance its budget, as a self-supporting ministry of First Baptist Church.

Help Protect our Community’s Health!
Join the Lord Fairfax Medical Reserve Corps As a member of the Lord Fairfax Medical Reserve Corps (LFMRC), you can be part of a force of dedicated volunteers ready to lend a hand during an emergency, as well as offering support for ongoing health programs in the area. Anyone can volunteer! Current or past healthcare providers are the majority of our
