THAT’S WHY THE NATURAL SCIENCES AND ENGINEERING RESEARCH COUNCIL OF CANADA (NSERC) ROUTINELY REPORTSNEWS OF BREAKTHROUGHS AND SUCCESSES IN NSERC-FUNDED SCIENCEAND ENGINEERING RESEARCH, TO CANADIANS AND THE WORLD.

WE WANT TO INFORM PEOPLE HOW THESE ADVANCES IMPROVE THEIR LIVESAND BENEFIT CANADA’S ECONOMY. THIS HELPS PROMOTE A BROADER UNDERSTANDING OF THE IMPORTANCE OF R&D AND BUILDS SUPPORT FOR CONTINUED GOVERNMENT FUNDING.

WE CAN HELP PROMOTE YOUR NSERC-FUNDED RESEARCH BY:

COMMUNICATING with�the�public,�news�media�or�specialized�audiences�

REVIEWINGthe�content�of�promotional�materials�

POSTINGyour�materials�on�NSERC’s�Web�site�or�on�the�main�federal�

government�science�portal—science.gc.ca�

USINGsocial�media�(Twitter,�Facebook,�etc.)�to�distribute�stories�and�news�releases

COLLABORATINGwith�you�to�produce�public�announcements�

about�funding�and�impacts�

PROMOTION

> Inform�your�institution’s�public�affairs,�communications�or�research�communications�department(s)�at�least�five�days�in�advance�of�all�public�announcements�or�communications�regarding�research�awards,�grants,�projects,�programs�and�results.

> Coordinate�announcements�nationally�and�liaise�with�the�office�of�the�Minister�of�Industry�to�secure�a�federal�spokesperson�(essential�for�funding�announcements).�

> Develop�news�releases,�backgrounders�and�speeches�for�funding�announcements�and�solicit�input�from�funding�partners,�researchers�and�the�institutions�involved.

> When�possible,�help�promote�stories�to�the�news�media,�post�or�link�to�relevant�Web�material,�and�provide�access�to�appropriate�experts�or�spokespeople.

NSERC MUST ENSURE GOVERNMENT OF CANADA FUNDING FOR RESEARCH IS ACKNOWLEDGED AT PUBLIC EVENTS AND FUNDING ANNOUNCEMENTS. OUR RESPONSIBILITIES ARE SET OUT IN THE COMMUNICATIONS POLICY OF THE GOVERNMENT OF CANADA.

> Review�communications�materials�developed�for�funding�announcements.

> Inform�NSERC�and�your�institution’s�communications�department�when�research�developments�or�results�will�appear�in�a�highly�visible�science�publication�such�as�Nature or�Science, or�a�newspaper�such�as�The�Globe�and�Mail or�La�Presse.

> Coordinate�with�your�institution�to�share�research�success�stories�with�NSERC.

> Acknowledge�NSERC�funding�in�all�public�communications�including�news�releases,�speaking�engagements,�presentations�and�media�interviews.�

> Provide�NSERC�with�at least five days’ advance noticeof�any�public�announcement�or�news�release.

LEAD RESEARCHERS:

INSTITUTION’S COMMUNICATIONS DEPARTMENT:

> Review�and�contribute�to�NSERC’s�communications�materials�for�funding�announcements;�assist�with�event�planning,�media�relations,�coordination�and�logistics;�and�secure�appropriate�institutional�spokesperson(s).

> Notify�NSERC�if�NSERC-funded�research�leads�to�findings�that�will�be�published�in�a�highly�visible�trade�or�mainstream�publication�(e.g.,�Nature,�Science,�The�Globe�and�Mail or�La�Presse),�and�work�with�researchers�and�all�relevant�fundingpartners—including�NSERC—to�promote�the�findings.�

> Inform�NSERC�of�research�impact�stories�and�share�publications,�news�coverage,�advertising�or�other�promotional�material�related�to�those�stories.

> Invite�NSERC�to�events,�conferences�or�other�public�activities�promoting�NSERC-funded�research.

> Ensure�NSERC�is�acknowledged�in�news�releases,�backgrounders,�and�other�promotional�materials.

> Provide�at least five days’ advance notice of�any�public�announcement�or�news�release.

> When�appropriate,�include�a�quote�from�an�NSERC�official�in�your�news�release.

> Include�NSERC’s�logo�in�news�releases�(for�joint�announcements),�presentations,�and�the�acknowledgement�section�of�posters�or�other�communications�products.

> Include�NSERC’s�standard�paragraph�in�materials�for�news�media�and�in�presentations,�publications,�Web�sites,�advertising�and�promotional�material.

> Acknowledge�NSERC�funding�in�your�news�releases�or�other�communications�material.�

> Identify�NSERC�programs�and�research�teams�as�they�are�described�on�the�funding�application.
