Wax finish is an old-fashion look that contractors from the 40’s

up to the 50’s used before urethanes was introduced in the

market.

Here are the 9 steps in how to wax your wooden floor

using two coats of wax and two coats of shellac and liquid

wax.

Amber or clear shellac Denatured alcohol Steel wool (1/0 to 4/0, depending on sheen desired) Small steel wool pads for edges White pad (1/4 - or 3/4 –inch) Dark or natural brown liquid wax 6-inch China made bristle brush or lamb’s wool applicator Buffer Rags

What You Need

First, mix 50 part shellac with a 50 part denatured alcohol.

Step 1

Use either a 6” china bristle brush or a lamb’s wool applicator to apply the mixture.

Step 2

After applying the first layer of the mixture, you need to buff the floor first before you apply another layer.

Step 3

In this step you will need to make the floor smooth. Use a 16”steel wool with a thick white pad for this.

Step 4

In using liquid wax, pour it out and use a rag that can hold a lot of wax.

Step 5

Apply the liquid wax parallel on plank floors and circular motion for parquet floors.

Step 6

Buff the wax and polish it with your desired sheen using a buffer.

Step 7

Now apply the second coating. After applying, buff it once again to your desired luster. Use a white flannel like rag to polish the floor further.

Step 8

If the floor is completely dry you can now move back your furniture. If it’s humid, leave the floor for at least a day before you proceed with moving your furniture back.

Step 9

You can either use liquid wax or paste wax to coat your finish

floor, depending on your personal choice. Paste wax is

thicker but takes time to apply while liquid wax is thinner but smoother and easy to apply.
