A Celebration of Outstanding UWI Women
On the occasion of The UWI 70th Anniversary
Throughout history, women have had to fight for their place and have proven that they deserve to be educated. When The University of the West Indies (UWI) began at the Mona Campus, Jamaica in 1948, approximately one-fifth of the cohort were women. It has been documented that women, including those educated at The UWI have made widespread and lasting contributions towards our societies, regionally and internationally.
In recognition of the invaluable contributions that these women have made, and in celebration of The UWI’s 70th Anniversary, the Institute for Gender and Development Studies takes this opportunity to share with you and to show appreciation for 70+ Outstanding UWI Women. This project grew out of the desire, as well as a sense of responsibility, to showcase the exceptional women that The UWI has produced, in diverse fields, on all of its Campuses. One individual has been selected to represent each class from 1948 to the present.
Through their history-making work and dedication, these women have contributed to and improved the quality of life for the peoples of the Caribbean region and beyond. Their work inevitably leads to gender justice for all.
