• Absolute Value and Opposites: 7. NS.1a Describe situations in which opposite quantities combine to make 0.

• Absolute Value:– How far a number is from zero.

Example "6" is 6 away from zero, but "-6" is also 6 away from zero.

So, the absolute value of 6 is 6, and the absolute value of -6 is also 6.

The symbol "|" is placed either side to mean "Absolute Value", so we can write: |-6| = 6

Additive Inverses (opposites)

What you add to a number to get zero. The negative of a number.

Example: The additive inverse of -5 is 5, because -5 + 5 = 0.The additive inverse of +5 is -5 as well.

1) 2 integers with same sign- Add the absolute values

- Keep the same sign -2+-3 = -5 4+3=7 2) 2 integers with different signs

- find the difference of the absolute values- keep sign of the greater absolute value - 5 + 8= 3 4+ -2= 2

*same signs add and keep/ different signs subtract
