Metric Units of Measurement

Objective

• To convert one unit of metric measurement to another

• Why? To know how to convert measures to help you in the sciences. Most countries of the world use the standard system of measurement called the Système International (SI) commonly called the metric system.

California State Standards

AF 2.1: Convert from one unit of measurement to another.

MR 3.1: Evaluate the reasonableness of the solution in the context of the original situation.

Vocabulary• Metric System– a measurement system that measures length in

millimeters, centimeters, meters, and kilometers; capacity in liters and milliliters; mass in grams and kilograms; and temperature in degrees Celsius

• Meter– The basic unit of length in the metric system

• m• Gram– The basic unit of weight in the metric system

• g• Liter – The basic unit of capacity in the metric system

• L

Vocabulary• Kilo– 1000

• Hecto– 100

• Deka– 10

• Deci– Tenth (.1)

• Centi– Hundredth (.01)

• Milli – Thousandth (.001)

km hm dam m dm cm mm

1 km = 1000 m

1 hm = 100 m

1 dam =10 m

1 dm =0.1 m

1 cm =0.01

1 mm =0.001

Conversions

When going from a smaller unit of measure to a larger unit, divide.

When going from a larger unit of measure to a smaller unit, multiply.

How to Convert in Metric

1) Count the spaces between the 2 conversions. Pay attention to the direction of going from the first to the second. It might be helpful to write out the chart: km, hm, dam, m, dm, cm, mm

2) Move the decimal in the original number the number of spaces and in the direction of Step 1. Keep the order of the digits the same. Left movement = smaller. Right movement = larger.

3) Check for reasonableness.

1) 1600 m = ___ kmm < km; divide by 1000 or move the

decimal 3 spaces to the left1600 m = _1.6_ km

2) 2.05 m = ___ cmm > cm; multiply by 100 or move the

decimal 2 spaces to the right2.05 m = _205_ cm

3) 4000 g = ___ kgg < kg; divide by 1000 or move decimal 3

spaces to the left

4000 g = _4_ kg

4) 30 kL = ___ LkL > L; multiply by 1000 or move decimal to

the right

30 kL = _30,000_ L

7) _4.25_ kL = 4250 L8) _10_ dm = ___ 1 m9) 2500 mm = _2.5_ m10) 6.5 L = _6500_ mL11) 3 km = _3000_ m12) _1_ g = 0.001 kg

Objective Review • To convert one unit of

metric measurement to another

• Why? You now know how to convert measures to help you in the sciences.

• To change a larger unit to a smaller unit, multiply

• To change a smaller unit to a larger unit, divide

• The shortcut for multiplying or dividing is just moving the decimal to the right or left

Independent Practice

• Complete problems 14-36

• Copy original problem first.

• Show all work!

• If time, complete Mixed Review: 37-45

• If still more time, work on Accelerated Math.
