CANAL A man-made waterway built to allow the

passage of boats or ships

CHANNEL A length of water wider that joins two

larger areas of water.

RIVER A large, flowing body of water that

usually empties into a sea or ocean

BAY Part of a sea or ocean that is to some

extent surrounded by land.

GULF Part of a sea or ocean that is to some

extent surrounded by land. It is larger than a bay.

LAKE Large body of water surrounded by land

on all sides.

SEA A large body of salt water that is

connected to an ocean.

OCEAN The largest bodies of salt water, oceans

surround continent. They are larger and much deeper than seas.

REEF A chain of rocks or coral or a ridge of

sand near the surface of water

MOUNTAIN A large, steep landform that stretches

above the surrounding land, usually in peaks.

DESERT An area of land where little rain falls and

living conditions are hostile for life.

PLAIN A broad area of relatively flat land

PENINSULA A piece of land that is bordered by water

on 3 or more sidesPeninsula in Mexico
