Operating Environment IMO Model Course 1.04 Part D Appendix 9Thesimulatorwillsimulaterestrictionsandfailuresinthecargotransfer,forinstance,introducedbythesimulatedshoreterminal.Alarmswillbeannouncedbyflashingalarmlampsandsoundinthe‘cargocontrolroom’.
Simulator FacilityTheseexerciseshavebeenwrittentakingintoaccountthevarietyofsimulatorswhichmaybeusedtofacilitatethem.Asfewspecificfeaturesaspossiblehavebeenfeatured,soastoincreasetheadaptabilityoftheexercisestothevarioussimulatorsavailable.
Thetankerinthispackageisdoublehulled,has10pairsofwingtanks,2to8ofwhicharesub-dividedintocentreandwingspaces.Eachtankhasitsownpump,ventlineandmanifold.Thereare2ballastpumps.Theballasttankarrangementhasnotbeenspecified.
However,thesimulatorshouldhaveitsownCargoOperationsManualwhichwillbeusedduringthetraining.

EXERCISE 1 Ship and simulator familiarisation
ObjectiveThepurposeofthisexerciseistohelpyoubecomefamiliarwiththeoperationofthesimulatorandthecargosystem.Itissuggestedthatduringthisfirstexercise,aballastpumpisstartedinorderforaballastspacetobetoppedoff.Thiswillgiveyouanopportunitytopracticepump,lineandvalvecontrol.ItisalsosuggestedthattheInertGassystemisstartedandthecargosystempressurised,inorderforyoutofamiliariseyourselfwiththeinertingprocess.
InformationThevesselhasjustdepartedfromdrydock,sothecargosystemisgasfreeandwillneedinerting.Allbunkers,freshwaterandballastareasperthenormalballastcondition,otherthentheforepeakballasttank,whichneedstoppingup.
Note:Itisappreciatedthatnotallliquidcargosimulatorswillhaveexactlythesamefunctionsincorporated.Thefollowingaresuggestionsofsystemswithwhichyouneedtobefamiliar:
1. CheckthevariouspagesofthevesseldisplayandespeciallythelocationandactivationoftheEMERGENCYSTOPfunction.
2. LocatetheindividualCARGOandBALLASTtankstatuspages,notforgettingeachelementoftheballastsystemincludingforeandaftpeaktanks,ifwithintheballastsystem.
3. FamiliariseyourselfwiththeDRAFTINFORMATION,whichwillbeimportantforarrivalstatusandwhenstrippingcargoandballasttanks,aswellasanydraftrestrictions.
4. Establishhowtoco-ordinatePOWERREQUIREMENTSfordeckandcargogear.Theserequirementswillalterdependingontheoperation,soyouneedtobefamiliarwiththeirsourceandtheplanningofrequirements.
5. BefamiliarwithGENERALOPERATINGPARAMETERSintermsofmaximumandminimumlevels.Onthesimulatorinusecanambientweatherconditionsbealtered?
6. ThepagesofthesimulatorscreendetailingtheCARGOTANKselectionandpreparation,valve,levelandalarmfunctionswillneedcloseattention.
7. BearinginmindthenumberofconfinedspacesontankerstheGASDETECTIONpanelswillbeofparticularconcern.
8. ItiscrucialthatBALLASTCONTROL,valves,levelandalarmfunctionsaremonitoredfrequentlyduringtheseoperations.
9. SomecargoesrequireaccurateCARGOTEMPERATURECONTROLfunctions,water,steamorthermaloil.
10. AnumberofexercisesrequiretheuseofTANKWASHINGfunctions,supplyingeitherseaorfreshwater.
11. AlmostallexercisesinvolveINERTGAS,NITROGENANDVENTINGARRANGEMENTS.CertainexerciseswillalsoincludeVAPOURRECOVERY,soaclosefamiliaritywiththesefunctionswillbenecessary.
12. SometankpreparationrequirementswillinvolveMECHANICALVENTILATIONsothefunctionofthefanssupplyingthisisimportanttomaster.
13. PUMPCONTROLSofeachtypeofpumpshouldbemasteredearlyintheprogramme,whichispartlywhyoperationoftheballastpumpisincludedinthisfamiliarityexercise.
14. ThefunctionsoftheMANIFOLDCONTROLSrequirefamiliarity.
15. DonotforgetthetankDRAININGANDSTRIPPINGarrangementsforcargoandballastsystems,astheywillbeutilisedduringthetraining.
16. Donotforgeteithertomonitorthestatusoftheballasttankbeingworkedduringthisfamiliarisationexercise.

EXERCISE 2 Cargo planning – Paper exercise
ObjectiveToplanthestowageofaseriesofparcels,withreferencetotheUSCGcargocompatibilitychart,takingintoaccountthesegregationofincompatiblecargoes.Acargoplanisappendedtothispackagesothecargoesincludedthereinmaybeusedforthisexercise,ifthetrainingestablishmentsodesires.

EXERCISE 3 Tank preparation washing and inerting
ObjectiveThisexerciseisfocussedontheobjectiveofpreparingthevesseltostarttrading.Cargoordershavealreadybeenreceivedandtheseincludehighspecificationcargoeswhichwillrequirewellpreparedtanks.Thisexercisewillinvolvethefinalstageofthepreparativeprocessinvolvingahotfreshwaterwashoftanks6CP&S,7CP&S,1P&S,2P&S.Inaddition,tanks5CP&Sneedtobeinertedwithnitrogen.
Information 1. Setupthetankwashingsystemandfreshwaterheatingarrangements,inordertowashthepairsof
tanksdetailedaboveintheobjective,6CP&S,7CP&S,1P&S,2P&S.
2. Intheinterestsofbestpractice,pressuretestthewashingsystempriortouse,atatestpressuremarginallyabovetheworkingpressure.Thistestmaybecarriedoutwithcoldratherthanhotwater.Youmustdecidewhetherfreshorseawaterwillbeanappropriatemediumforthistest,notingthepreparationrequirementsofthenextcargointhosetanks.
3. 5CP&Swillneedinertingwithnitrogen.Again,youmustdecidewhichmethodofinertingismostappropriateforthecircumstances:dilutionordisplacement.
4. Allfixedandportablegaddetectionandanalysingequipmenthasbeenchecked,calibratedandisreadyforuse.
Competence Requirements1. Intheinterestsofbestpractice,ensuretherelevantchannelsofcommunicationareworkingsmoothly.
2. Youhavealreadyfamiliarisedyourselfwiththenitrogenplant,duringExercise1,soitisnowtimetousethatknowledgeforthepurposeofinertingthesaidtanks.
3. BearinmindthepressuresettingsinthetankP/Vvalves,considercarefullytheinletvelocityofthenitrogenintothetanksandpaycloseattentiontothedeliveryandmainpressures.
4. Considercarefullytheambienttemperatures,includingairandseatemperatures.Rememberthatvastdifferencesinsuchtemperaturesinsideandoutsideofthetankscouldresultincondensation.Theresultantpotentialcargocontaminationissuescouldbecommerciallydamaging.Ensurethedewpointofthenitrogendestinedfor5CP&Sisoflowdewpoint,toensureadrytankatmosphere.
Ensureyoubecomewellpracticedwithdrainingandstrippingproceduresduringthiswashingoperation,inthelightofthecargooperationstofollowinduecourse.

EXERCISE 4 Commence loading
ObjectivePlanandexecutealoadingoperation,withdueaccordancewithsafetyandpollutionpreventativemeasures.Ensurepre-cargochecksandtestsarecarriedout,includingalarms.
Information1. Thevesselissecurelymooredportsidealongside.
2. Cargotankswillhavebeencleanedandpreparedreadyforloading.Thevesselisballastedtothenormalarrivalballastcondition.
3. Youwillhavehadtoprepareacargoloadingandde-ballastingplananditwillbeimportanttofollowtheplantoenablethetwooperationstobeconductedsimultaneously.
4. Thevessel’sdraft,trim,listandstressesarenottoexceednormaloperationalparameters.

6. Whenplanningthisloadingoperationtakeintoaccountthemaximumloadingratesofeachtank,inrelationtoitsventingcapability.
Competence Requirements1. Monitorthewayinwhichtheloadingofeachgradeiscommencedwithrespecttocommunications,
loadingratesandnumberoftanks.
2. Monitorthesamplingprocedures.
3. Onceloadinghasstartedintherequisitecargotanks,monitorthewayinwhichde-ballastingoperationsaremanaged.
4. Demonstratefrequentmonitoringofallcargoandballasttanks,toensurethatemptytanksarenotleakedinto.Atthisfirstloadport,eachparcelisbeingloadedintofourcargotanks,withtheexceptionoftheCTC,whichisgoingintotwotanks.
5. Demonstratehowthedischargepressuresoftheballastpumpsshouldbemonitored.Thecargomanifoldbackpressureshouldbeconstantlymonitoredandrecordedinthecargolog.
6. Generalcommunicationswithdeckcrewandterminalshouldbemaintainedefficiently.
7. Whilstalongside,mooringandsecuritywatchesneedtobemaintained.
8. Youshouldagreewiththeterminalthesamplingprocedurestobefollowedforeachgrade.
9. Statewhichtankalarmsrequiretestingbeforeloadingcommences.
10. Statewhichchecksarerequiredontheventingsystems.
11. Statewhichprovisionsaremadeforgastesting.

ObjectivesThisexerciseisdesignedtofamiliariseyouwiththemanagementofmultipleoperationsconcurrentlywithtoppingoffcargotanksandclearingoflines.
InformationTheparcelsofCTC,acetonitrileandpotassiumhydroxideareclosetotoppingoffandtheirloadingwillbecompletedduringthisexercise.ThoseofAceticAcidandBenzenehavenotlongstarted.
Alltankscontinuetoneedmonitoring,nomatterwhattheirstatus.However,theoriginalplanningofstaggeringtheparcelsapproachingtheirfinishcancometofruitionduringthisexercise.

ObjectivesAswellasgeneralmonitoringandcargocare,theBenzeneparcelwillrequireagitationorre-circulation,bearinginminditsviscosityandfreezingpointtemperature.Forthefirsttime,acargopumpwillbestarted.
Information1. Thetankerisatsea,partiallyloaded.TheBenzenecargorequiresre-circulatingand,priortoarrivalat
thenextport,thetankspreparedtoreceivepropyleneoxideneedtheiratmosphereschecking.
2. Theshipwillbeatseaonaloadedpassagewiththepowerononlyforcargomonitoringsystems.Powerforoperatingcargopumpsandvalveswillneedtoberequestedandestablished.
3. Donotforgettomonitorallothercargoandballastspacesforanomalies.

ObjectivesThisexerciseisfocussedontherequirementtoperformapre-washofthetanksfromwhichCTChasjustbeendischarged.
Information1. Thestatusofthecargotanksbeingworkedwillbesuchthatastaggerwillhavebeenestablishedin
orderthatresourcesmaybetemporarilyconcentratedonthestartingofthewashingprogramme.Thisactivityshouldinnowayunderminethemonitoringofotheroperations.Youshouldalsounderstandthatthepre-washneedswitnessingandrecordingbyaMARPOLcargoinspector.
2. Oneoftheaimsoftheexerciseistorealisethebenefitofsoundforwardplanningandefficientresourcemanagement.Anumberofactivitieswillbeon-goingsimultaneously,andthemanagementofsuchformstheessenceofchemicaltankeroperations.Whilstmonitoringalladditionalactivities,10PandSrequireapre-washimmediatelyuponcompletionoftheirdischarge.Thedurationandnumberofcyclesofthispre-washwillbedeterminedbyconsultationwiththetanker’sP&Amanual.Itissuggestedthatthetankwashingmachinesarerunfor40minutesineachtank,concurrently,inorderforthewashingtobeefficient.
3. Ensurethattheabovestepshavebeentakenpriortothesettingupandpre-washingofthenecessarytanks.Communicationswiththedeckwatchshouldremaineffective.Alsoitisgoodpracticetoadvisetheterminalofthecommencementoftankwashing.Ensurethatthelines,valvesandpumpsaresetupaccordinglyandthatthepumpsarestartedandpressurebroughtonthelines,followinggoodpractice.
