Nowadays it’s only an option, and frankly, not one that many people use. It’s not hard to see why when we are spoiled by the instant gratification that digital photography provides us.

With a digital camera we can take a picture and immediately check to see if it’s composed well, if it’s well lit, if our exposure is on point. If the pictures aren’t good, we can delete them. If we want to, we can take a thousand frames in a matter of twenty minutes.

When we shoot film, we have none of these luxuries available to us. We have one roll (or multiple, depending on how much money we want to spend), which contains 24-36 frames. This means that we need to take our time; carefully plan out what exactly we want to shoot. We have to rely on the knowledge we have to ensure that the picture comes out right; what shutter speed we should be shooting at, what f-stop, etc. If it’s bad, we need to decide if we want to let it go, or if we are going to spend the time and money to reshoot.

It’s not easy, but maybe it’s worth it. Maybe we need to take a step back, to slow down, and to pay attention to what it is we are shooting. It’s not about how many frames we can shoot, but how well we execute the ones that we do. It’s not about being able to rectify a mistake in the blink of an eye, but learning from it.

If there is one thing we can all learn from film, it is that sometimes, the fas t and easy way i s not a lways the bes t way.
