process book meta reflection:..................................................my process book is not at the place where i hoped it would be by the end of the semester. looking over my book i have come to real-ize that a lot (and when i say a lot i mean most) of my process takes place in my mind and never makes it down to paper. this revolation came at the eleventh hour and it is a little late for this book, but it does give me an idea of what i don’t want to repeat. i do realize that organization is not my strong suit, but i think there is room (and time) to improve. going from keeping little to no record at all, to having to keep an extensive record of my processes, was and continues to be a hard transition. with time i’m sure it will come more naturally to me, i just have to keep pushing myself to take the time to document everything. now that i have an idea of what a process books should look like i think it will be a bit easier to keep one that represents the way i work. I honestly think my biggest problem is painting myself into a corner with my projects. I get stuck on one thing and push that over and over again until I’m stuck. I need to push myself as far as I can go and I think I will be able to see an improvement in my process. I am going to try not limiting myself to one image or idea and push as many as I can. Instead of worrying about others people in the class having the same ideas, I need to worry about how I can convey them better than everyone else.

sailors get swallow tattoos after they have sailed 5000 miles or more. the swallow represent good fortune in many cultures. (it also signifies land)

so the reverse would be a sailor tattoo on a swallow’s leg. i think that would represent bad fortune and the sea.

14

swallow keychaina swallow tattoo is supposed to represent good luck and good fortune, so i decided to bring the idea to something that was a little less permanent. the keychain represents the most identifiable part of a barn swallow, it’s tail.

object translation meta reflection:..................................................i guess i didn’t get what this project was about until after we were already done with it. the object translation project was the most frustrating project for me personally. it seemed that everything i tried to do was just not good enough. i didn’t feel like i had a solid direction. it didn’t help that i picked a bird that (other than it’s tail) looks pretty much like every other bird in the world. i quickly found myself wishing i had picked another animal. maybe something like; a bear or a buffalo. you know something that is a little more… distin-guishable from hundreds of other animals. having said all of that, picking something that is not easily translated, has made me work harder.

hi-low abstraction meta reflection:..................................................as much as i love minimal design there is something that i feel i still need to learn about making it. the hi-low abstraction is a step towards understanding how to make simple design with complex meanings. having time to reflect about my hi-low abstraction from this semester, i see that i used positive space with little or no thought about the negative space in which the positive was sitting. for my final designs i tried to take this into account.

creativity (i.c.) meta reflextion:..................................................

the pressure of making something in less than three hours got to me a little bit. this was definitely interesting because i saw that time constraints have a huge impact on work. it made me understand that i am not always going to have as long as i want on a project. you have to adapt and make things to the best of your ability.

this is the piece i turned in. it is composed of images i have collected over time and stored in a folder on my desktop called “stuff”.

creativity (o.c.) meta reflection:..................................................my final creativity design was a result of trying to go in a dif-ferent direction than the ideas of a lot of my classmates. during our idea and sketch faze of the project one of my sketches was chosen to be put up on a main board for the class to talk about. i thought my idea was a creative solution to the task: the design process through; curiosity creativity and discovery. my idea was to have a split image; one side boring every day life and on the other what a designer sees. designer vision, if you will. i found, though, that a lot of people had the same idea as i did. so, instead of focusing on making my idea stand out in a sea of like minded individuals, i decided to change focus and look at the things that inspire me. i used images that i have collected over the past few years and created a very bland collage that I then dressed to attract the eye(this was not my original intent). though every picture in the collage has meaning to me, the final result did not translate well.

10 black squares meta reflection:..................................................the ten black squares project was fun, but also a little irritat-ing. i learned a little bit about using positive and negative space effectively. this project definitely stretched my think-ing process. In the middle of the project i discovered that i like things symmetrical and that even when i am not trying they end up falling into some kind of order. this was one of those times where i could see what i was doing wrong, but my brain and my eyes disagreed. this project helped me a lot in the hi-low project we did later.

4 black squares meta reflection:..................................................the four black squares project was a bit more difficult than the ten black squares (even though we had more freedom to overlap and crop) because we were limited to four squares. this really pushed the idea of positive and negative space to the extreme. Even though the sketches and the decisions for the final six squares took me a long time to figure out, i think the thing that took me the longest was measuring and cutting the squares and frames.

conn vs den meta reflection:..................................................i struggled with the relevancy of this project until we go to the mixture of the four squares and these images. before i knew what we were doing i had a lack of motivation to find all of these images when we didn’t even look at the project due be-fore hand. after finding all of these images and seeing that a lot of people had duplicates, it made me search for new was of finding images (ie not just google image search).

4 squares +images meta reflection:..................................................

i think this was a great project to relieve the stress of cutting and measuring all those squares! it was a lot of fun learning how to use illustrator. i have tried a million times, but it finally clicked during this project. mixing color in when we had been without it for so long was also a big part of why i liked this project so much. working with the same materials (black squares and white paper) was about to drive me crazy and this little playful assignment prevented me from pulling my hair out.

justice meta reflection:..................................................the justice project was by far my favorite project this semes-ter. unlike the object translation project, i felt like i had a focus and was successful at tweeking my ideas around the class’s suggestions. this project was the one i got the most feedback on and i think it shows.
