NEXT SUNDAY PREVIEW
Next Sunday, Part 3 of our “Connect” series, we will look at “What Destroys
Relationships and What Builds Them?” In this “Connect” series we’ve been
affirming the simple truth that we were created for community. We’re
wired for relationships. However, there’s another simple truth to consider:
It’s easy to get disconnected in relationships. Relationships can disinte-
grate and fall apart. Why? What destroys relationships? In what ways can
we rebuild relationships or even prevent relationships from going bad in the
first place?
Hope to see you on Sunday, September 21, as we explore and answer these
questions! By the way, this would be a great Sunday to invite a friend,
neighbor or co-worker.
Together connecting,
Pastor Harold

COMING SOON...UMW APPLE PIES!
Fall is time for Asbury United Methodist Women
Apple Pies! Order your pies Sundays, Sept. 21 and 28, in
the narthex, or contact Gloria Carter, 849-7589. Pies are
$13 each or $25 for two. We'll assemble the pies on
Saturday, Oct. 11, and have the quick-frozen pies ready for
you to pick up at church Sunday morning, Oct. 12. Take
home and bake right away or save in your freezer for a special treat or the holidays. We may have a few ex-
tras, but if you want to be sure there's a pie (or pies) waiting for YOU, don't forget to place your or-
der. Proceeds from our Apple Pie Sale help fund United Methodist Women projects serving women, chil-
dren and youth around the world. Thanks for your support!
Volunteers Needed for Pie Project
We can't do the Apple Pie Project without your help. Here are six ways you can help make it a success:
1. Purchase, peel, and thinly slice 10 lbs of pie apples. Put them in plastic bags or containers (no need to add lemon juice) and bring them to the church by Saturday, Oct. 11 at 9 AM. If you wish, you may place them in the church refrigerator on Thursday or Friday, Oct. 9-10.
2. Join the "apple peeling/slicing party" Friday, Oct. 10, at 9 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall. Bring your apples and join the fun!
3. Donate apples and leave in the church kitchen to be peeled and sliced at the "party" on Friday, Oct. 10.
4. Enjoy fun and fellowship with church friends as you put the pies together on Saturday, Oct. 11 at 9 a.m. at the church.
5. Donate money to buy supplies (plastic bags, sugar, etc.). Make checks to Asbury UMW.
6. Buy a pie or two...or more!
Sign up at church to help or contact Gloria Carter, 849-7589.

Coming UMW Events and Activities!
What’s happening with the United Methodist Women? While we had a few activities
through the summer, everyone is now back in full swing. You have may have seen or
heard announcements for the Sunrise Quilters, Friendship Circle, Covenant Book &
Bible Group and the Dine-Around Group. If you have a slot in your schedule this year to
be filled with a meaningful activity and fellowship, try one of these small groups! Details
are also listed in the Fall Book 2014.
Also coming soon, our annual Apple Pie Sale. Every nickel of profit goes towards mission support. And what
fun it is to gather on the Saturday morning to make these pies assembly-line style. Come and join us.
Finally, our Asbury UMW is hosting the 2014 Conference Annual Gathering on October 17 &18. We are
expecting upwards of 200 women of all ages from around the state for a Friday evening and Saturday event.
Check out the program, speakers and topics at: http://www.wisconsinumw.org/2014-conference-gathering-
page.html You will also find registration forms online or at the Welcome Center. Early registration is $25
(includes Saturday lunch) and ends on September 29. Special activities, sessions and registration fees for
young women grades 7-12, including a lock-in and dance!

It has been an absolute blessing getting to know our InsideOut youth group these past six months. We have
had an AMAZING summer full of worship, service, fun, and fellowship. As we look back on the amazing
things God has done this year in the youth ministry, it's also time to look ahead to what's next. We will have
a scheduling meeting Sunday September 21st at 4pm in the Fireside Room. At the meeting, we will go over
the schedule for the entire 2014-2015 school year up to the summer. All high school youth and parents are
encouraged to attend. Bring your calendars and planners as we look forward to what God
has in store at InsideOut this next year!
In addition, I am always on the lookout for more adult volunteers for the youth ministry. If
you have a heart for youth and a desire to come alongside them to shepherd and encourage
them as they grow in their faith and you like to have a ton of fun, please feel free to let me
know. Parents of course play the single most crucial role in raising a child, but I believe
having spiritual mentors to come alongside and support parents is essential.
As always please let me know if you have any questions whatsoever about our youth
ministry at Asbury.
Looking forward with you in Christ,
Carter Baldwin

ASBURY COMMUNITY GROUPS
Asbury’s vision is to care within and reach out, that all
may know Christ. At the core of this vision and at the
core of our human existence are relationships. Our de-
sire is to live in relationship with God and with others.
One of the main ways we are seeking to live out this
vision is through our new Community Groups. Com-
munities are small groups of about 8-16 people that
meet weekly to learn together, and share life with each
other. Groups vary in day, time, location, and affinity
(women, men, couples, young adults, open to all, etc.)
to hopefully accommodate as many people seeking to
engage as we can. Most Community Groups will meet
weekly from September through May, although some
may choose to meet throughout the summer as well.
The main purpose of Community Groups is to create
safe and supportive environments to help people grow
in authentic relationship with God and others. Com-
munities will spend time in various studies provided
for them centering around sermon discussions, topical
studies, Bible studies, and/or book studies. By varying
the types of study, we seek to meet a variety of learning needs as well as meeting a variety of levels of spiritual
growth as well as teaching us all different ways of digging deeper in our faith.
Check out this list of all of our Communities and pick the one that works for you!

Come and join the Sunrise quilters on Sept 16th at 9am. If you can tie a
knot, iron, sew or cut and measure you are welcome to join and help us
make quilts for the Linus project. We make blankets for the local hospitals
and Nicu blankets for the premi nursery.
This is a service project and many children benefit from our efforts.

THE FRIENDSHIP CIRCLE—Monday, September 15 - 1:00PM The Friendship Circle will join together for a meeting and tasty desert on
Monday, September 15th at 1:00 PM in the Fellowship Hall. It will be a fine
time to get caught up with summer activities, travels and the like, so please
make a note on your calendars to be in attendance on that day. Our program
will be given by a representative of the WI Alzheimer Assoc. and there will be
much to learn and share about this particular disease. All women are invited to
participate in this wonderful time of sharing and fellowship.

ASBURY SENIORS
“It will be tough to top that program”
said one of the seniors regarding
September’s luncheon program of
“The Three Wives’ Men”, the gospel,
bluegrass, country singing group
from Pardeeville. There were over
forty in attendance—perhaps our best
attended event yet.
Every month we meet the room is
always filled with din of conversation
as everyone connects with one another. Come, be a part of the connection. Our next event will be October 14th with a
program with the Madison K-9 officer and his unit.
NEW MISSION/OUTREACH COUNTER
We have a new Mission/Outreach Counter included in our new redesigned church lobby. This is an area for all groups
(Missions, Outreach, UMW, Youth, etc.) who have something to offer the larger church, to set-up on Sunday morning
in the lobby. A maximum of two groups can set-up each Sunday for a maximum of two weeks. The new Mission/
Outreach Counter will replace the tables and easels we have previously used. The Mission Counter is directly across
from the Hospitality Counter.
If you would like to use the Mission/Outreach Counter, call or email Ric Hoerz, Business Manager, at 238-9211 or
rhoerz@asburymadison.com
Ushers and Greeters: We Need You!
Asbury needs lots of volunteers to maintain our vibrant and welcoming
atmosphere each Sunday. Lately, we are falling short on volunteers to greet
or usher at either service. Whether you can serve once a year or every week,
all levels of commitment are valued and appreciated. Training is provided for
all opportunities. If you have questions about what role is best for you or
would like to SIGN UP, please contact Sherry Hershberger at
sherry@gypsymoth.com or 238-0737. Thank you!

Prince Patrick Myers, Asbury's Liberian Medical Student
Liberia is in the news because of the outbreak of Ebola and the fear, illness, death and disruption to life
that is resulting. The United Methodist hospital at Ganta is on the front lines, but as you can imagine this
small facility is challenged because of a lack of staff and resources.
Asbury began an investment in health of the Liberian people and the future of Ganta United Methodist
Hospital in 2010 by supporting Prince Patrick Myers' medical school education. Prince is a student at the Uni-
versity of The Gambia Medical School where he has completed four years. His start there was rough. He re-
ceived notice of his admission a month after classes began, so early on he was playing catch-up. His first
grades were barely passing. His most recent grades show that he is indeed a remarkable student. He received
distinction in Community Medicine in the Spring semester. His classes this coming year will include Medi-
cine II, Surgery, Pediatrics and Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Prince was born in Ganta and educated through high school at the United Methodist Mission School
there. His mother is a nurse in the Ganta Hospital operating rooms. He completed a degree in Chemistry at
Cuttington University in Liberia and then decided to become a medical doctor. Opportunity for medical edu-
cation in Liberia was nearly non-existent following the civil war. Prince was fortunate to secure a spot in The
Gambia at the university, nearly 1500 miles from his home in Ganta. He is a Christian in a largely Muslim
country. His professors teach in English, but many are native Spanish speakers from Cuba. Prince has com-
mented on the challenge of his Liberian ear understanding Spanish accented English. There is a shortage of
textbooks and supplies. Fortunately, we are able to send some items in barrels shipped to The Gambia by As-
bury member, Frank Kooistra. When Prince finishes his training he will return to a position at Ganta Hospital.
Our original budget for Prince was $7000 per year. This was an under estimate! His current expenses
include tuition, room, board, transportation, books, equipment, utilities, internet, clothing, and visa. All of this
comes to nearly $23,000/year. Fortunately Prince has been awarded a World Communion Scholarship by the
United Methodist General Board of Global Ministries for $7500/year. Asbury has been very generous in meet-
ing Prince's need. September is the month that we seek support for Asbury's Liberian medical student. Please
pray for Prince and his family in Liberia. Your gift in his support is needed and appreciated. Mark your
checks for the September Mission of the Month. Thank you.
For September...

MIDDLETON OUT REACH MINISTRIES (MOM) The Asbury Missions Team and MOM would like to extend a very
sincere thank you to each of you for making MOM's Back to School
event a great success again this year. Each year MOM has been able to
count on generous donations of supplies, backpacks and cash that make it possible for them to serve
over 800 children in our area and beyond. This year they served 873 children, giving each of them the
foundation needed to start the school year off on the right foot. We couldn't do it without your help
and dedication. Thank You!
Dine-Around Group
Join us for great food, great conversation, and short meaningful
devotions. Women meet throughout the year for fellowship and
dining at various area restaurants (separate checks) or homes
(potlucks). Child care is not provided but you are welcome to
bring them along. See below for information on our next gather-
ing.
We don’t have set dates; we want to mix it up as busy women
need flexibility! Watch the Circuit for future notices of gatherings. If you’d like more timely notifica-
tion, become a member; contact Susan Forrester 608-836-6078 susanforrester@rocketmail.com
