2020 ASME/SME Student Manufacturing Design Competition
Thepurposeofthecompetitionistofosterinterestinmanufacturing,providethemanufacturingengineeringcommunitywithfreshnewperspectivesondesign,andcreateaforumforstudentstoshare their new and innovative ideas.Held during theASME2020 InternationalManufacturingScience and Engineering Conference (MSEC), June 22-26, 2020 at the Duke Energy ConventionCenter in Cincinnati, OH, USA. The 2020 StudentManufacturing Design Competition (SMDC) issponsoredbyASMEManufacturingEngineeringDivision(MED),andco-organizedbyASMEMEDandtheSMENorthAmericanManufacturingResearchInstitution(NAMRI).
IntroductionOriginalstudentdesignsthatfocusonmanufacturingengineeringandsciencearesought.Anydesignofasystem, component, orprocess that canbeused topromote the art, science and practice ofmanufacturingengineeringisacceptable.
RequirementsThe project report is limited to 3,000 words withsupporting figures and/or photographs. Items thatmustbeincludedintheprojectdescriptionare:
• ProjectTitle• Namesandaddressesoftheparticipatingstudents,withonedesignatedascorresponding• Thenameandsignatureofafacultysponsorwithcompletecontactinformation
A successful entrymight also include a description of the problem(s) being addressed and keyrequirements,afunctionaldescriptionoftheconcept/idea/model/system,comprehensivedesignanalyses, andexperimentsor toolsused,discussionofhow the concept improvesuponexistingdesigns,andastatement listingthepercentcontributionofthegroupmembersandanyoutsideassistance(e.g.,faculty,shoppersonnel).Duetothedeadlinefortheapplicationandthefactthatsuchstudentdesignprojectsareoftenpartofaseniordesigncapstoneproject,itisunderstoodthataworkingprototypewillnotnecessarilyhavebeencompletedbythetimeofthesubmission.Suchprojectswillbejudgedbasedonthedesignandanalysisoftheconcept.
ProcessEntries from either teams or individual contestants must be submitted in electronic form tofrank.pfefferkorn@wisc.edu and received byMarch 20, 2020. Up to eight finalist teamswill beselected from the entrants andwill be expected to give an oral presentation at the2020MSECconference.Theuseofvisualaidsanddemonstrationofworkingmodelsarehighlyencouraged.

JudgingUptoeightfinalistswillbeselectedonthebasisoftheprojectdescriptionsbyapanelof judgesrepresentingindustry,academia,and/orgovernmentorganizationsrelatedtomanufacturing.Thefirstroundofjudgingwillbeapanelreviewofthesubmittedprojectdescriptionsandwillfocusonthequalityoftheprojectdescription,creativityofthedesign,andintegrityoftheanalysisandtestapproachforevaluatingthesolutioninlightofrequirements.TheeightfinalistswillbenotifiedbyApril 8, 2020 and are expected tomake a fifteen-minute presentation followed by five-minutequestionsessiononJune23,2020atthe2020MSECconference.Judgingforthefinalroundwillbebasedonthequalityofthepresentationaswellasoncreativityofthedesignandintegrityoftheanalysis and test approach for evaluating the solution based on stated requirements. Judgingcriteriaincludebutarenotlimitedto:
• Communicatingtheproblemtobesolved• Effectivelymeetingrequirements• Integrityoftheanalysis• Creativityofdesign• Goal-driventestingapproach
• Impactofdesignonmanufacturingcost,quality,orothermanufacturingandperformancemeasures
• Qualityofthepresentation(ontime,clear,professional)
AwardsCashprizesandawardsofrecognitionwillbepresentedattheASMEAwardCeremonyduringtheconference.FirstPrizeis$1,000,SecondPrizeis$750,andThirdPrizeis$500.
EligibilityAnygraduateorundergraduatestudentwhoisregisteredinschoolfulltimethroughSpringof2020orbeyondcanparticipate.Bothindividualandgroupprojectsarewelcome,andindividualsmayparticipateinseveralentriesprovidedeachentryisonaclearlydifferentsubject.
TravelExpensesandSupportTravelexpensestotheconferencewillbetheresponsibilityofthestudentsand/orfacultysponsor.Onepresenter fromeachteamcanelect toacceptanNSFStudentTravelGrant thatwillpay forconferenceregistrationandlodging.Pleasenotetheadditionalobligationsofthisaward:attendingaU.S. university / college,must attend the entire conference (Tuesdaymorning throughFridaylunch),andattendtheEarlyCareerForum.Detailedinformationontheavailablestudentsupportwillbepostedat theconferencewebsite.Each teamisalsoeligible fora$500supplement fromASMEManufacturingEngineeringDivision,whichcanbeusedtowardstravelexpenses.
