Director’s Comments Happy March! Spring is always so
exciting . . . the smells, the pop-up days of
warmth teasing us for what is to come, and of
course our Boys of Summer, the Detroit
Tigers back to work taking part in spring
training. Sure, we will still have wintery
days, but the days are getting longer and we
can see that spring is well on its way.
First and foremost, I would like to
thank all of those who so generously donated
to the Have-a-Heart Fund, which is a fantastic
program provided by Friends of Isabella
Seniors. As a result of the wonderful donations that were received, we were
able to provide assistance to 75 individuals, who were so incredibly thankful
for the gifts. Thank you all again so very much! (See Have a Heart Donors
on the next page.)
For those who might not know, March 3rd is Caregiver Appreciation
Day. I would like to take this opportunity to recognize and show our sincere
appreciation to all of the Caregivers in our community. Caregivers are
family members, paid helpers, or volunteers who regularly assist individuals
with daily living activities. Caregivers are essential for those who want to
remain in their homes but are unable to care for themselves. It is so
important for Caregivers to find balance, understanding that taking care of
oneself is just as important as taking care of someone else. Did you know
that we have a Caregiver Training Program that provides resources and
support to Caregivers here at the Isabella County Commission on Aging?
We have a Caregiver Support Group that meets monthly, providing a support
system for Caregivers, letting them know that they are not alone. The
schedule for the support group can be found in this issue of Active Living on
Page 7. In addition to the Caregiver Training Program, we also have a
Respite Care Program through our In-Home Services Program that provides
relief for Caregivers by having a Commission on Aging staff member spend
time with the individual in need of care, allowing the Caregiver to participate
in an activity or get rest. For more information on either the Caregiver
Training Program or Respite Care, please call the Commission on Aging at
989-772-0748.
As always, I encourage everyone to take advantage of all of the
wonderful programs and services offered through the Commission on Aging.
We are here to support you and hope to see you here taking part in programs,
activities, and fellowship.

Jennifer A. Crawford, M.S.A. COA Executive Director
The Commission on Aging office and COA Activity Center
building will close at Noon on Friday, March 30, in
observance of Good Friday. All Food with Friends Meal Sites
will be CLOSED on Friday, March 30, and there will be no
meal delivery.
Spring is just around the corner and our Foster
Grandparent and Senior Companion volunteers have
been very busy in 2018. In January we had an
orientation with 8 new volunteers, 6 new Foster
Grandparents and 2 new Senior Companions! They are
excited to get out and volunteer in their communities.
Also, in January, Commission on Aging
hosted a community wide training on Vulnerable Adult
Awareness. Lieutenant Traci Ruiz spoke on elder abuse,
neglect, detection and exploitation. We hosted 90
community and state-wide attendees and professionals.
A special thanks to Friends of Isabella Seniors for
sponsoring the event.
On a final note, the
Foster Grandparent / Senior
Companion Programs
would like to give a special
thanks to the Mt. Pleasant
Arbor of Gleaner’s Club for
their generous donations of
IRide tickets to our
volunteers! Thank you so
much it, was greatly appreciated!

Ask a COA Specialist Question: What is a Representative Payee?
Answer: If you are unable to manage your Social Security
or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits you will need
someone to serve as your representative payee. The Social Security
Administration (SSA) can choose your payee or you can choose
someone. Representative Payees must be approved by the Social
Security Administration.
The payee is required by law to use your benefits to pay for
your current needs, satisfy past debts and, if possible, to save for
future needs. He/she must use your benefits to pay only for your
needs, such as food, shelter, clothing, and medical care. On an
annual basis SSA will request the payee provide a written account
of how your money was spent. The payee is also responsible for
keeping SSA informed about other changes that may affect your
eligibility for benefits. You must notify Social Security if you wish
to change your payee or you feel you no longer need a payee.
