CWNA Annual Picnic and General Meeting Notes
September 10, 2016 Joan McConnell, Chair, called the meeting to Order at 1:10 PM. The Chair welcomed all 30+
attendees and introduced the Executive Board Members who were present: Steve Wille, Skip
Paynter, and Gina Nelson. It was also noted that this is the 15 year celebration of the founding
of CWNA. The attendees were all given a piece of cake that the City of Vancouver provided
in honor of our 15 years. Chair also read aloud the card from the city that accompanied the
cake and passed it around.
Reports from Exec Board were called for by the Chair –
Steve Wille – Countryside Park was hit with some vandalism over the summer, but
Steve Wille has agreed to stay on as the Adopt-A-Park lead and stated some of the
accomplishments of the last years: removal of most of the burdock and grant money
received/spent on irrigation and native plants. Contact Steve if you would like to
become involved with the park cleanup.
Treasurer’s Report – Jason Erb was not in attendance so no report was given.
New Business:
Recognition of EB – Chair recognized the hard work and efforts of the current
Executive Board and thanked them for their ongoing work on making Countryside
Woods a great neighborhood.
On behalf of CWNA Skip Paynter recognized Steve Wille for his years on the Board
and his contribution to the betterment of our neighborhood. Steve attended many
meetings representing CWNA, and was instrumental is making the Briarwood
Development a positive addition to the neighborhood. Steve agreed that he could be
called upon in the future for his expertise.
Election of new Executive Board for 2016-17
The Chair stated that there are current volunteers for the upcoming year: Joan
McConnell--Chair, Karl Parsons--2nd
Chair, Gina Nelson--Treasurer, & Dennis Roberts,
Laurie Christensen, Lynn Shebilske, as Members at Large. Vacancies are 1st Chair,
Secretary, Parliamentarian, ONE Member at Large, and Newsletter Editor. The Chair
asked if anyone was interested in serving in one of the vacancies. There were no takers.
The Chair asked the nominees to come forward and tell us about themselves: what you
do (job/retired), how long in CW, and one of your interests. Gina Nelson is from the
East Coast, lived in the CW for 1.5 years, and is a quilter. She also has been a treasurer
before in a few work related entities. Lynn Shebilske is retired and has lived in the
neighborhood for a few years. She is involved with the homeless and currently
volunteers for a church serving food to the homeless.

We have a few returning Executive Board members not here, but they have given me a
written statement that they would like to be nominated to serve this coming year. They
are
Karl Parsons, retired, and was 2nd
Chair, wishing to serve as 2nd
Chair again
Dennis Roberts, was M@L last year, wishing to serve as Member at Large again
Laurie Christensen, retired, wishing to serve as Member at Large this coming
year.
We need a motion to nominate the following as the Ex Board of CWNA for 2016-2017:
Joan McConnell, Chair Karl Parsons, 2nd
Chair
Gina Nelson, Treasurer Dennis Roberts, M@L
Laurie Christensen, M@L Lynn Shebilske, M@L
Ned McConnell motioned that the slate of candidates be elected to the new Executive
Board. The motion was seconded by Jack Steffen. When the Chair asked if there was
any discussion or questions, there was none. The vote was unanimous to elect the
nominees to the Executive Board.
Traffic became an issue this summer, specifically speeders on 12th
Street and 12th Way
coming from First Place and going to 155th Avenue. A neighbor, Jodi Burns of 12
th
Street, contacted the Chair about what could be done. Chair emailed her all kinds of
information and Jodi stated she would contact the Chair if she had any questions. When
asked if she was interested in serving on the Executive Board she said no. When
contacted before the Picnic, Jodi said she has contacted the City, but has not had a
response from them yet. Jodi stated she could not be here today, but the Chair thought
it would be good to bring up the issue. When asked if anyone else has an issue with
traffic in the neighborhood, a general discussion about the new development
(StoneBriar) and the impact on the 155th Avenue traffic ensued. People were in general
agreement that there are speeders that travel though the neighborhood above the speed
limit on 155th
and that some stop signs at the new development, and/or on 12th Street,
and/or 12th Way might slow them down a bit. When asked, there were no volunteers for
a traffic committee, or anyone willing to take on this issue.
The Chair thanked everyone for coming and specifically thanked Jan Blackwell for
taking notes during the meeting.
With no other business to discuss, Jack Steffen motioned that the meeting be adjourned. It
was seconded by Ned McConnell and carried unanimously. Meeting adjourned at 1:35.

DID YOU KNOW??….When your dog goes on the lawn, remember it doesn’t just go on the lawn. Dog poop is more than just an icky nuisance. It’s a health risk to dogs and people, especially children. It’s full of bacteria that can make people sick. And it’s a source of water pollution. When it rains, dog poop melts away and runoff carries it to storm drains, ditches and streams that feed our rivers, lakes and marine waters. Bacteria from dog poop can end up in shellfish. People who eat those shellfish can get very sick. The bacteria can also make water unsafe to drink or to swim in. Nutrients from dog poop can also feed the growth of aquatic plants and algae. As these decay, they use up oxygen in the water that fish and other aquatic life need. Dog poop left on the ground is no small problem. Based on a study by the American Veterinary Medical Association, it’s estimated that there are 1.6 million dogs in Washington State. That means hundreds of tons of new dog poop every day!
Dog poop doesn’t have to be a problem. What will you do to help?
Carry plastic bags when taking your pet for a walk or a romp in the park. Pick up your dog’s waste. Use a plastic bag, scoop or disposable gloves.
Remember to wash your hands afterward. Seal the waste inside a plastic bag (or two) and throw it in the garbage. Keep dog poop out of septic systems and sewer systems. These systems
are designed for human waste only. Pick up after your dog in your yard every few days—more often if you have
small children.
PLEASE NOTE: It was disgusting that Steve Wille, the outgoing chair, had to clean up and dispose of 10+ piles of dog poop before the picnic at our Countryside Park.
So PLEASE! Pick up after your pet.
