MOCCASIN CROSS COUNTRY
The Moccasin cross country teams have been a dominant powerin the Sunshine State Conference.
The men’s team has fi nished fi rst or second at the SSC Cham-pionships 19 straight years, including a string of 14 straight SSCtitles that was snapped in 2011. Overall, the men’s team has won a league-best 16 SSC Championships, including winning thechampionship in 2013. The women’s squad has won seven SSCcrowns and has fi nished fi rst or second in 14 of the last 18 years.
Individually, Florida Southern has had the men’s individual SSCchampion 12 of the last 17 years, including two-time champions Gary Crossan (1998-99), Tyrone Bell (2004-05) and Ben Martucci(2009-10). Florida Southern’s women have claimed six SSC indi-vidual titles, including back-to-back wins by Alli Tatangelo (1999-2000). In 2006, SSC women’s champion Jael Koech placed sixth atthe NCAA Division II Championship, making her the Moccasins’ fi rsttwo-time All-American in cross country. She was 12th in 2005.
The women’s team has made three trips to the NCAA DivisionII Championship, fi nishing 11th in 1999, 21st in 2001 and 15th in 2006. The men’s team made its all-time seventh appearance atthe NCAA Division II Championships in 2013, placing 27th overall. Previously, FSC had placed 23rd in 2010, 22nd in 2009, 21st in 2007;15th in 2006; 13th in 2005 and 20th in 2004. The women have hadnine top-fi ve regional fi nishes, while the men have fi nished in thetop fi ve 11 times at NCAA regional appearances, including winningregional titles in both 2013 and 2007.

ACADEMIC SUCCESSDavid Tomchinsky and Chris Yanichko of the men’s cross coun-
try and track team, along with Ashley Dudman and Rebecca Levyof the women’s cross country and track team were each namedrecipents of the NCAA Division II Academic Achievement Awardin 2013-14. The foursome were among 87 student-athletes sohonored from Florida Southern College.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete had to have anoverall grade point average of at least 3.50, had to have complet-ed at least two years of college work and had to have been anactive member of an athletic team.
The Division II Academic Achievement Awards were fi rst pre-sented in 2009 when FSC had 46 honorees. The awards are spon-sored by the Division II Athletics Directors Association.
In addition, Yanichko was also named a Capital One/CoSIDAFirst Team Academic All-American for the second consecutiveseason, becoming the school’s fourth-ever Academic All-Ameri-can in men’s cross country and the fi rst to ever earn back-to-back Academic All-American honors.

Founded in 1975, the Sunshine State Conferencehas risen from a single sport organization to the Division II“Conference of Champions.” Since its inception, the confer-ence has grown steadily in sports played, membership andnational prominence. Sunshine State Conference member schools havewon NCAA national titles (87 total) in baseball, softball,men’s basketball, men’s and women’s golf, men’s andwomen’s tennis, men’s and women’s soccer, rowing andvolleyball, and are nationally recognized in men’s andwomen’s cross country, men’s and women’s swimming andwomen’s basketball. The first NCAA Division II nationalchampionship won by an SSC school was in the spring of 1978 as the Florida Southern baseball team capturedits first of nine national titles that year. The SSC sponsors championships in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball,men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soc-cer, mens and women’s swimming, men’s and women’s tennis, women’s volleyball,softball, men’s and women’s lacrosse and women’s rowing. The first women’s SSCchampionships began in 1981-82. The SSC has led all 22 Division II conferences in the NCAA Academic SuccessRate every year it has been measured. Each year, over 800 student-athletes are namedto the Commissioner’s Honor Roll with GPA’s over 3.20 on a 4.00 scale. SSC members include: Barry University (Miami Shores); Eckerd College (St.Petersburg); Florida Tech (Melbourne); Florida Southern College (Lakeland); LynnUniversity (Boca Raton); Nova Southeastern University (Ft. Lauderdale); Rollins College(Winter Park); Saint Leo University (Saint Leo); and the University of Tampa (Tampa).Embry-Riddle (Daytona Beach) and Palm Beach Atlantic (West Palm Beach) are intheir first year of provisional membership in the league.
