You don’t have to go to Indy or Chicago to experience great shopping. Anchored by Von Maur department store, Jefferson Pointe offers restaurants, over 60 shops, an 18-screen stadium seating theatre and IMAX and more! Go for a stroll, and be sure to try something new. Walk around Fountain Circle (go ahead, let the kids dip their toes), then enjoy lunch. Grab a last-minute gift, or spend the afternoon window-shopping. How about dinner, an opening weekend blockbuster, and the most delicious dessert in the city? Or, maybe it’s time for coffee and live music. It ’s all right here.

Shopping with a different of view.

Located just northeast of Fort Wayne, and a bit off the beaten path, you’ll find the quaint Amish town of Grabill, Indiana.

Scenic farms and horse-drawn buggies lead the way to this appealing village that boasts unique shops, antique stores, and an afternoon of adventure.

One item to add to your to do list is the Country Shops of Grabill, an impressive store loaded with antiques, primitives, finished oak, glassware, painted furniture, and other unique items. Be sure to catch the indoor flea market, 10 am to 5 pm, Monday-Saturday, year-round. You can find everything here from an antique pipe organ to handbags.

Speaking of shopping, other options include the Catalpa Tree Shops, Mother Hubbard’s, Katie’s Kountry Korner, and Miller’s Country Store.

Another nod to the days of yesteryear, H. Souder & Sons General Store, looks like something right out of an old western movie. The façade resembles an old country store, and the inside boasts old-time treats and kitsch. Think Coke memorabilia, ice cold bottled soda, penny candy, homemade jams, fresh roasted coffee, and local Amish cookies and baked goods.

A day of shopping calls for some nourishment. Why not visit the town’s full-service restaurant, the Grabill Inn? Here they serve standard American fare with an impressive menu − everything from frittatas to chili cheese nachos. And then, be sure to top off your meal with a sweet treat from the Grabill Dairy Sweet. It’s a tasty way to end a lovely day.

For 50 years Indiana University–Purdue University Fort Wayne has enhanced northeast Indiana’s intellectual, cultural, economic, physical, and creative quality of life by providing outstanding educational and recreational resources. To honor its 50th Anniversary Celebration, IPFW is permanently enhancing the visual landscape of its campus and community.

Sculpture with Purpose—IPFW’s flagship 50th Anniversary Celebration public art project—will enrich the Fort Wayne landscape with 50 new sculptural bike racks. Merging the need for additional bicycle parking with the desire for public art into an IPFW-led, community-wide project was enthusiastically embraced by the entire city and artists throughout the country.

More than 150 designs were submitted for selection by artists from seven different states. Of those, 50 sculptural bike racks by 23 artists were selected.

On May 17, 2014, the sculptures will be dedicated during a community celebration of bikes, art, and music - and the landscape of downtown Fort Wayne will change forever!

Stop by the Visitors Center to pick up a map of all 50 locations and participate in a “sculpture hunt” to find all of these amazing pieces of work.

There is perhaps no better way for the university to commemorate its 50th Celebration. IPFW Sculpture with Purpose encourages the benefits of cycling while enriching the streets with art for everyone to enjoy. It is a tribute to Fort Wayne’s passion, momentum, and innovative spirit. IPFW Sculpture with Purpose is a new legacy to be enjoyed for generations to come.

Fort Wayne has been named “Playful City USA” four times, and when you check out our parks, trails, and splash pads, it’s easy to see why!

Come play in one of the seven FREE splash pads conveniently located all around the city: Memorial Park, McCormick Park, Waynedale Park, Shoaff Park, Buckner Park, Robert E. Meyers Park in Parkview Field, and Kreager Park.

The splash pads feature fountains, water jets, showers, dumping buckets, sprinklers, and more. The fun water features are activated by touching a green post which starts a four-minute cycle. The splash pad at Memorial Park features a rubberized play surface for an even safer splash pad experience.

The splash pads open for the season around Memorial Day and close around Labor Day, weather permitting. The pads are open from 9am to 9pm daily.

Dogs are always welcome in the parks and on the trails, but are not allowed within 100 feet of the splash pads for the safety of splash pad users. As always, don’t forget your sunscreen.

Come have fun and get fit at any of our free splash pads during the summer and see for yourself why Fort Wayne is a Playful City USA.

Sweetwater Sound 5501 US Hwy 30 W. • (260) 432-8176www.sweetwater.comSweetwater Sound is one of the nation’s leading musical instrument and sound retailers, right here in Fort Wayne. With a vast selection of everything from guitars, drums, and keyboards to pro audio, software, and computers, Sweetwater is the ultimate musicians’ destination.

Visitors to Fort Wayne should keep one thing in mind when they visit: come hungry! There is a lot of buzz surrounding the downtown dining scene that has grown into a social hub in recent years. In the last year alone, downtown Fort Wayne has welcomed a new coffee shop, deli, martini bar, and BBQ & Bourbon saloon to its roster. As exciting as these new developments have been to the downtown scene, nothing quite beats longtime staple, Coney Island.

Coney Island will celebrate its one-hundredth anniversary in downtown Fort Wayne in 2014. The secret to their success is built around three simple concepts that they have been offering to their customers for the last century: great food, great location, and great customer service.

Coney Island was the dream of three Greek immigrants who came to America at Ellis Island and saw first-hand the original Coney Island in New York. They decided to bring a taste of that to downtown Fort Wayne with the opening of Coney Island on Main Street in 1914. Their Coney Dogs haven’t changed much over the years and that is a good thing.

Over the last hundred years, their menu has remained almost the same as when it was created. Coney Island keeps it simple and offers their customers a home away from home. They know many of their customers on a first name basis and visitors will see customers from age five to age eighty-five sitting on the stools, chatting with the employees, and enjoying one Coney Dog after another.

Open seven days a week, they sell an average of two thousand hot dogs and hand-chop over fifty lbs. of onions daily. The food is delicious, which is apparent from the constant stream of customers that come through the front door. Coney Island opens early and it’s not uncommon to see folks stopping in for a few Coney Dogs for breakfast.

The great taste of the food, smiles from the staff, and numerous historical photos on the wall make the nostalgia hard to resist. Coney Island easily makes the top ten list when visiting Fort Wayne because it not only provides customers with affordable, delicious food but the location presents a unique environment for patrons. As they embark on their second century of business, visitors are assured that if there is one thing in life that they can count on to brighten their day it’s a Coney Dog from Fort Wayne’s Coney Island.

100 Years of Coneys!

HOSPITALITY ASSOCIATION

The pineapple is the international symbol of hospitality.

One of Fort Wayne’s many treasures is The Genealogy Center at the Allen County Public Library. The Genealogy Center is home to the nation’s largest public genealogy collection, and is housed in a gorgeous new $65 million facility.

The Genealogy Center is home to over 340,000 print volumes and 590,000 microfilm resources. These holdings include family and local histories from the United States, Virgin Islands, Ireland, and Eastern Europe.

The five rooms of The Genealogy Center and its online catalog include international collections, historical periodicals, ship passenger lists, military regimental

histories, southern plantation records, Native American census and tribal records – to name a few. The Genealogy Center offers several computer banks for research, as well as wireless internet services throughout the facility.

The Genealogy Center is led by trained genealogy staff and provides free resources to get visitors started in their genealogical research. One way to start is by taking a video tour of the Center and reviewing the suggested plan to get started in genealogical research. These planning tools are available on the Center’s website at www.genealogycenter.org.

The Genealogy Center is conveniently located at 900 Library Plaza Drive in the heart of downtown Fort Wayne. This location is ideal for visitors who may want to experience the other exciting downtown Fort Wayne attractions, such as the Grand Wayne Center, Parkview Field, Embassy Theatre, Fort Wayne Museum of Art, and Artlink.

Plan a trip to discover you family heritage, right here in Fort Wayne at the Allen County Public Library Genealogy Center. www.genealogycenter.org

JumBy’s JoiNt: Owner Jim Garigen says the menu changes daily, but you’ll always find all-American staples, like grilled cheese, cheeseburger, and fries. You gotta try the truffle fries! Bravas Food: Brava’s features all-beef hot dogs, with fresh chopped veggies, and homemade chili. Be sure to try their super-secret Brava Sauce. Thick cut Ossian bacon also comes on some of the hot dogs.

Affine Food Truck: Affine’s point of difference is its farm-to-fork approach that includes free-range, locally sourced pork, chicken, and duck. You’ll love their lunch sandwiches and Late night Mexican style tacos.

Big John’s Ragin’ Cajun:“Big John” Maxwell serves up the cuisine of New Orleans and the Louisiana Bayou to northeastern Indiana. Think Po’ Boys and Jambalaya!

The Getaway Grill: Jerry Perez, owner, says everything he buys is produced locally, from farmers markets. We hear the chicken and black bean quesadilla is to die for!

Spicer’s: Chef Eric Spicer prefers to think of his operation as a kitchen on wheels. The menu changes regularly. But you can expect all-American favorites like hamburgers and pork tenderloins.

Whip & Chill: Got a hankering for dessert? Whip & Chill will hit the spot. Enjoy ice cream cones, sundaes, floats and shaved ice. Kids will beg for a stop here.

Think Beyond Traditional:Fort Wayne Food TrucksFort Wayne is known for its wide array of dining options – it’s no coincidence that we are known as The City of Restaurants! But now, local food trucks are challenging residents and visitors to think beyond the traditional brick-and-mortar restaurant setting for tasty fare. Good food can be enjoyed on the go, from one of several locally owned mobile operations. From all-American to Cajun, these food purveyors offer something for everyone.

Here is an overview of the main players in the local food truck scene:

You can’t go wrong with any of these vendors, and many of the others you’ll spot around town! So, bring your appetite and be sure to grab plenty of napkins. (Food on-the-go can be messy.) To learn more visit, www.facebook.com/FortWayneFoodTruckAssociation.
