ANIMAL ENCouNTERS

Plett is home to several different animal sanctuaries that provide conservation education to visitors as well as safe-havens for many different animal species. This includes the largest free-flight bird aviary in the world, the world’s first free- roaming multi-species primate sanctuary, safe-havens for elephants with interactive elephant experiences and two refuge facilities for indigenous cats and other large predators. There are also two rehabilitation centres established for the rescue, rehabilitation and release of birds of prey and other indigenous wildlife.

CANoEING & RIVER TouRS

Rent a canoe in the Keurbooms River Nature Reserve and laze your way up river between high craggy rocks and deep verdant forest. If you’re feeling a bit more adventurous, experience game viewing by canoe. And if you just want to chill, enjoy a lazy trip through the Storms River Gorge on a lilo inflatable raft.

dIVING

The rich marine life of Plett makes for excellent diving and snorkelling. A popular and easy snorkelling trail has been laid out in the sea in the Tsitsikamma National Park, set up to protect the unique coastal environment where cold and warm currents meet and mingle to create an immensely rich variety of underwater species, Tsitsikamma National Park lies 60 km / 50 minutes from Plett Central.

GAME VIEWING

Experience South Africa’s magical creatures in an area offering game viewing on horseback for an “off the beaten track” experience, viewing with traditional 4x4 game drives and a unique opportunity to enjoy the animals by canoe. Plett is home to the largest game reserve in the Southern Cape with 2200 hectares of wilderness, including beautiful mountains along the pristine coastline. Animals you may experience include hippo, giraffe, lion, rhino, buffalo and crocodiles, as well as a number of different species of game and up to 200 bird species. (10 km / 10 minutes from Plett Central).

HIkING

Plett is surrounded by nature reserves and National Parks – which is perfect, because it means you’ll find many well-maintained hikes and short walks in the area:

• TheRobbergNatureReserveisbyfarourmostpopularwalkingdestination,with three trails to choose from – ranging from 45 minutes to 5 hours (9,2 km) in length. Guided tours are also available (Robberg: 10 km / 10 minutes from Plett Central)

• OtherwalksincludeKranshoek,GardenofEden,Nature’sValley,Wittedrift,Milkwood Trail (all within 20 km of Plett Central) and the various trails in the Tsitsikamma National Park (70 km from Plett Central)

HoRSE RIdING

Forest outrides and horse trails are available (most stables are 15 km / 15 minutes from Plett Central). Horses are not permitted on beaches in Plett.

MARINE SAFARIS & BoAT CRuISES

There are two marine safari companies operating from Central Beach – four times per day, seven days a week (depending on sea and weather conditions). There is also an adrenaline boat cruise as well as the option to dive with the seals.

Minke whales, Orca and Bryde’s whales can be seen throughout the year – as can dolphins, cape fur seals and other marine mammals. The migratory whales appear during Plett’s Whale Season (June – November), where you will be sure to see Southern Right and Humpback whales when they come to the shallow, protected waters of Plett to mate and calve (Central Beach boat launch site: 2 km / 2 minutes from Plett Central).

RIVER BoAT RIdES

There are about 6 km of navigable waters in the Keurbooms River Nature Reserve and a number of picnic spots next to the river with secluded beaches where you can spend your day swimming, tanning, fishing – or, perfectly – just doing nothing. (Keurbooms River Jetty: 5 km / 7 minutes from Plett Central).

SEA kAYAkING

Kayaking – the perfect way to explore Plett. You’ll see whales, dolphins, seals and sea birds with a lot more besides and, of course, there are a number of rivers awaiting exploration. (Central Beach boat launch site – 2 km / 2 minutes from Plett Central)
