Sign up begins November 1st
For the rst me in the history of4-H Naonal Youth Science Day,
the 2013 Naonal Science Experiment is available for online play!
Click the link below to experience 4-H Maps & Apps from the
comfort of your personal computer or tablet, and explore how geography and geographic informaon systems (GIS)
make a posive impact on the world. hp://nysdapp.4-h.org/4h/index.php#!home
You will noce that there is a "Learn about GIS" opon before you skip directly to the GIS Game. You have to scroll
down through some text items and then you will see 4 Steps. The last one is called "How the Web App Works". It is
highly recommend looking at this before you play the game!
The Maps & Apps activities are especially meaningful if you have an abandoned lot or other potential
target location for a REAL community park. Consider talking with your local park district and/or city
government about those possibilities.
Maps & Apps kits are available for loan from your local Extension officethese are non-computer
based kits.
Jr. Leaders are an important part of the leadership team in the 4-H club, at the
county level and at the state level. Jr. Leaders serve as a helper to the club lead-
er, a mentor to younger members and their families, a helper with projects,
contests, and as a leader on county or unit commiees and as a member of state
planning teams.
Jr. Leaders should be at least 13 years of age as of September 1st, a current 4-H member, have completed 2
years as a member of 4-H, have the approval of their 4-H leader and complete the Jr. Leader Orientaon. Appli-
caons will be available beginning November 1st from 4-H leaders and orientaon will begin in January. Training
will include resource materials and telenets and possibly one Face-to-Face session.
Jr. Leaders can serve in a variety of ways and may idenfy the areas (on their applicaon form) they would like to
parcipate in at the club, county, unit and state levels. Recognion will also be provided to Jr. Leaders through
local county Achievement Awards.

Make A Lasting IMPACT
National 4-H Week provides a great opportunity to put your local 4 -H club in the spotlight and grow your 4 -H member-
ship in your club. How can you promote 4-H in your community? Ways to celebrate and promote 4-H might include:
Wearing your 4-H Shirt to school
Invite a friend to a 4-H meeting
Participate in a community service activity
Send a letter or picture to the newspaper and tell about your club, record public service
announcements
Help your club make a window or other type of display for your community showing what
4-H is all about
Make a poster promoting 4-H and put in your school or local business
More information is available from your 4-H leader and the Extension office.
National 4-H WeekOctober 6-12
Ofcers CornerWhy Use Club Commiees
Brainstorm and research ideas that cannot be
truly gathered during business meeng.
Give younger members a chance to gain expe-
rience and grow into club responsibility.
Give older members a chance to demonstrateleadership and responsibility.
Saves valuable me during business meengs.
THIS-N-THAT
Community Service:Explore history by interviewing nurs-
ing home residents about how they
grew up. These residents may appreci-
ate the company and you might learn something
new. This could even be turned into a club project
by taking pictures and making a poster or display
out of the dierent histories you learn about. The
Extension oce can provide resources on aging for
your club to check-out if given enough noce.
